What You’ll Be Doing- Working mainly in the field as the primary investigator on fatality and other complex enforcement inspections.
- Independently performing complex and comprehensive industrial hygiene and occupational safety inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with adopted OSHA standards.
- Providing Ohio public employers and employees with occupational health and safety compliance assistance.
- Identifying existing or potential safety and health hazards and facilitating compliance with adopted Ohio Employment Risk Reduction Standards in the Ohio Revised Code & Ohio Administrative Code chapter 4167.
- Completion of an undergraduate core program in environmental health, physical/natural science or engineering.
- Minimum 12 months experience in the private sector or another governmental agency performing same or comparable duties of Industrial Safety Hygienist 3, 24473; valid driver’s license.
- Or 12 months experience as Industrial Safety Hygienist 3, 24473; valid driver’s license.
- Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.
Occupational Safety
Major Worker Characteristics- Knowledge of
: industrial hygiene safety practices, laws, rules & regulations; interviewing; investigative/inspection techniques & procedures; employee training & development; PERRP policies & procedures; natural sciences; public relations; OSHA Standards 1910, 1926 & 1928; consensus standards (ANSI, NEC, NFPA); agency procedures; OSHA letters of interpretations, compliance directives, FOM; sampling equipment calibration; industrial hygiene sampling protocols. - Skill in
: use of PC and peripheral equipment; use of MS Office software; use of equipment operations such as direct reading instruments (sound‑level meter, octave band analyzer, single & multi‑gas meters, velometer) to perform most complex sampling & testing; citing, interpreting & applying Federal OSHA regulations and standards; citing, interpreting & applying Consensus Standards; technical writing; conducting research on industrial or environmental health & safety hazards;
interpersonal communication; addressing various audiences & adapting to those audiences; handling multiple projects & prioritizing based on many variables; use of PERRP Application; use of OSHA web application. - Ability to
: recognize unusual or threatening conditions & take appropriate action; define problems, collect data, establish facts & draw valid conclusions; prepare & maintain accurate & concise records/reports; use proper research methods in gathering data; gather, collate & classify data about people, places & things; handle sensitive inquiries from and contacts with employers, government officials, accountants, attorneys & the general public; prepare & deliver speeches, seminars & training sessions;
use statistical analysis; communicate technical data verbally & in writing; work in a non‑office setting; coordinate use of time & resources; address multiple issues at employer sites; comprehend a variety of complex technical written material and incorporate into recommendations & findings; resolve complaints; market products or services; travel throughout the State of Ohio; identify accident causations; work independently or in a team setting.
