Position: Cincinnati - Ergonomist 3 (PN 20068181)

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Performs complex ergonomic surveys and investigations to draw scientific and technical conclusions from multiple industrial risk hazards.
  • Interprets varied technical topics and applies advanced methodologies related to biomechanics, physiology, human factors, and engineering technologies to derive project controls preventing injury and illness losses.
  • Identifies applicable regulatory and non‑regulatory standards during inspection and evaluation of safety programs to ensure compliance.
  • Prepares written and oral reports of investigations and sensitive findings presented to all skill‑level audiences including labor, engineering, and senior management; counsels with employers, union representatives, and management/labor organization officials to obtain, provide, interpret, or explain information for administrative policy development and/or negotiation; advises and explains implementation of measures and large‑scale engineering changes required for control of losses.
  • Establishes and maintains contact with safety consultants, engineering staff, and all levels of management to provide service.
To Qualify, You Must Clearly Demonstrate
  • Completion of an undergraduate core program in industrial engineering or physical/natural sciences; 12 months experience in private sector or other governmental agency performing the same or comparable duties of Ergonomist 2 (NYS‑24512); 1 course or 3 months experience in technical writing; valid driver’s license.
  • Or 12 months experience as Ergonomist 2 (NYS‑24512); 1 course or 3 months experience in technical writing; valid driver’s license.
  • Or equivalent of minimum class qualifications as noted above.
Major Worker Characteristics
  • Knowledge of industrial & construction safety practices; public relations; human relations; BWC policies & procedures; interviewing techniques; industrial engineering; physical science (e.g., physics, chemistry) or engineering; ergonomics; state & federal industrial safety standards, laws & regulations; investigation principles & techniques; technical writing; safety training.
  • Skills in operating PC and computer software; operating various testing equipment (e.g., heat stress meter, octave band analyzer, motion analysis equipment, inclinometer, light meter, velometer, sling psychrometer).
  • Ability to deal with many variables and determine specific actions; write complex technical reports; read & record figures accurately; understand manuals & verbal instructions; prepare concise and accurate reports; proofread technical materials; use proper research methods to gather data; communicate effectively orally and in writing; handle sensitive inquiries from employees, employers, and union representatives regarding industrial safety/ergonomics issues.
Unusual Working Conditions
  • Non‑standard work hours.
  • Position requires travel (25%‑75%); must provide own transportation and/or legally operate a state‑owned vehicle.
  • Occasional overnight travel may be required; occasional extended work hours including second and third shift; frequent exposure to noise, dirt, temperature extremes, all industrial hazards and occasional toxic substances, caustics, carcinogens; frequent constrained and prolonged static work postures.
