Summary:
Perform the duties of a professional theatrical stagehand assisting with the load-in, set-up, rehearsal, running, and load-out of events at the UIS Performing Arts Center in Sangamon Auditorium, the UIS Studio Theatre, Brookens Auditorium, and support spaces. Also perform periodic equipment maintenance and other duties as assigned.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Install, inspect, maintain, and operate theatrical and meeting room equipment/systems including lighting, rigging, audio, wardrobe, video, portable staging, orchestra shells, props and scenery, personnel and equipment lifts, freight elevators, presentation equipment, etc. Setup Performing Arts Center spaces in advance of events and restore Performing Arts Center spaces after events to their normal configuration and ensure inventory is maintained and neatly placed back into storage areas.
Perform inspections and maintenance of Performing Arts Center equipment/systems. Unlock and lock performance, storage, and support spaces as required assuring that all spaces and equipment including safety systems and tools, are secure and that facilities are restored upon leaving the premises. Serve as a communication link between the UIS Performing Arts Center team and other unit areas, campus departments, or users of the UIS Performing Arts Center.
Arrange for and supervise work crews of up to 12 extra help stagehands. Lead extra help stagehands in the completion of their duties in accordance with the needs of the event or the UIS Performing Arts Center. Perform other duties as assigned including attending meetings.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. High School diploma or equivalent
2. Two (2) years (24 months) of professional experience or college-level study working with stage equipment, public address or sound reinforcing systems, and/or lighting for live theatre purposes.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience in a professional Performing Arts Center or similar setting that regularly hosts national touring events and artists.
Previous experience being responsible for the setup and operation of the lighting system or the sound system in a live theatre environment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of industry norms of a theatrical work environment usually gained from several years of experience in live event operations or advanced college-level studies.
Knowledge of stage and meeting room electrical, lighting, audio and video system setup, operation and maintenance procedures.
Knowledge of safe theatrical rigging procedures.
Ability to operate and maintain sound and lighting equipment appropriate to the professional presentation of live-theater productions, addresses, concerts, and similar programs.
Ability to work as directed and to follow written and verbal instructions.
Ability to work varying and unusual work schedules.
Ability to lift and manipulate heavy objects up to 50lbs unaided.
Ability to use your hands in a skillful, coordinated way to grasp and manipulate objects and demonstrate small, precise movements (manual dexterity).
Ability to concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted.
Ability to communicate fluently in the English language both orally and written.
Ability to work in both quiet and extremely loud environments.
Ability to climb ladders and stairs on a regular basis.
Ability to see objects and persons in low-light environments.
Ability to be a leader and direct a work team to accomplish a desired task.
Ability to create and maintain a safe working environment for both yourself and those around you.
