The Division of Vascular Surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine is seeking a Vascular Surgeon at the Assistant/Associate Professor level, depending on experience and academic record, to join our academic vascular surgery division.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will have a broad range of open and endovascular skills, an interest in teaching vascular surgery residents and medical students, and a commitment to an academic career path. Qualified applicants interested in serving as Program Director of the Vascular Surgery Residency are desired. The Division practices at two 500 bed hospitals located in Springfield and an affiliated 300 bed hospital in Decatur, IL.

Educational facilities, an outpatient clinic, and outpatient vascular laboratory on the same campus of one facility in Springfield. Practice opportunities are diverse, spanning the full spectrum of vascular disorders and their diagnosis and management. Operating endovascular suites are available to facilitate advanced endovascular procedures at all three hospitals and ambulatory procedures are performed in our outpatient facility. The Division also directs an ICAVL inpatient and outpatient Vascular Ultrasound Lab.

In addition, division faculty practice in three hospital-based wound centers which provide ample opportunities for clinical activity in CLTI and diabetic foot disease. SIU has a rich academic history in vascular surgery and long-standing commitment to surgical education. The Division of Vascular Surgery has an integrated vascular residency which has been accredited since 2011. There is a strong and supportive relationship with our primary hospital and a newly opened state-of-the-art facility for advanced simulation and education is available for teaching and research.

Research opportunities are also abundant. There is strong outcomes research collaboration between the university and our primary hospital, positioning us well for future healthcare changes and academic productivity. We have a strong collaboration with the SIU Center for Clinical Research, which provides expertise in clinical research and clinical trials, including statistics, database analysis and management for outcomes research. There are also facilities and collaborators for basic or translational research.

The section of Vascular Surgery and Department of Surgery are fully committed to providing support for a candidate's academic interests. Progressive leadership opportunities for programmatic development are available.

Administration 20%
  • Serve as Program Director of the Vascular Integrated Residency including the administration of the residency, selection of traninees, and other administrative duties related to maintenance of the training program.
Research 10%

Be productive with a research commitment in the Department of Surgery/Division of Vascular Surgery. Independent research will be maintained as well as collaborate research on projects with the Division Chair, other members of Vascular Surgery, and other faculty in the Department of Surgery and the School of Medicine.

  • Participate in the utilization of the computerized data base for vascular surgery at both hospitals and SIU School of Medicine.
  • Organize prospective and retrospective clinical research projects, epidemiological, physiological, and therapeutic outcomes, using the laboratory, hospital and operating room facilities.
  • Seek outside grant funds to support salary and research.
  • Publish in refereed journals and write book chapters.
  • Deliver lectures at state, regional, and national meetings to give results of research efforts and represent the division and department at these meetings.
  • Maintain current literature files, research literature, read widely, and keep up-to-date of the latest developments in vascular surgery.
Teaching 10%

Assume an active role in teaching medical students, residents and also in teaching the nursing and laboratory staffs. Teaching duties will include rounds, lectures, clinics, ward work and activities in the operating room and the laboratories.

  • Assist in the vascular surgery education of medical students on the surgery clerkship and during medical student elective periods.
  • Present curriculum and have direct clinical contact with medical students and residents.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of specific undergraduate curricula in vascular surgery.
  • Participate in and sponsor continuing medical education programs for vascular surgery.
  • Participate in and attend surgical clinical conferences, M & M conferences, Vascular Surgery journal club, vascular x-ray conferences, vascular lab journal clubs, and laboratory conferences.
  • Teach students, residents and not only endovascular and operative vascular surgery but also management and diagnosis of all types of vascular diseases and basic science instruction.
