Job Summary

The music teacher is responsible for delivering engaging and differentiated instruction that is aligned to the curriculum and Illinois Learning Standards. The music teacher’s goal is to develop in each student an appreciation of music through activities that include singing, listening to music, moving to music, reading music, playing musical instruments, and performances. The music teacher establishes a positive learning environment and commits to fostering a love of music in students.

The music teacher maintains regular communication with parent(s)/guardian(s) regarding their instructional program and student success. This position is at the fourth and fifth grade level and requires travel between two school sites on a daily basis.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Develops lesson plans that demonstrate knowledge of the important concepts and skills in music, as identified in the district’s curriculum.
    • Introduces a variety of skills as a means of developing in each student an appreciation of music.
    • Provides instruction through hands‑on activities that involve, but are not limited to, singing, dancing, listening to music, reading music, and playing musical instruments.
  • Prepares lesson plans that incorporate best‑practice instructional strategies in music education.
  • Develops learning outcomes that are rigorous and aligned to the district’s curriculum.
  • Uses a variety of instructional resources and materials to plan engaging, rigorous, and differentiated activities that advance student musical skills and creativity.
  • Fosters a love for music and promotes musical development across all grade levels.
  • Designs a variety of student assessments aligned with the learning outcomes, using both formative and summative assessments to:
    • Monitor students’ progress in their skills and understanding of musical concepts.
    • Tailor lessons to accommodate diverse learning needs and abilities, ensuring all students have opportunities to learn.
  • Promotes positive and supportive relationships with students.
  • Maximizes instructional time by:
    • Establishing efficient classroom routines and procedures.
    • Guiding instructional groups.
    • Managing classroom transitions.
  • Manages classroom behavior by:
    • Communicating clear expectations for student conduct.
    • Proactively monitoring student behavior at all times.
    • Responding to student misbehavior in an appropriate and respectful manner.
  • Enhances the learning environment by:
    • Arranging the classroom to support instruction and student activities.
    • Instructing students in the proper care and use of musical instruments.
    • Utilizing available technology and instructional resources to engage students.
  • Uses questioning and discussion strategies during instruction to:
    • Engage students in critical thinking and reflection.
    • Encourage students to make connections, draw conclusions, and formulate arguments.
    • Challenge students to explain their thinking.
    • Strengthen students’ ability to develop their own questions.
    • Assess student understanding.
  • Engages students in activities and assignments that are intellectually challenging, allowing students to reflect on what they have learned.
  • Reflects on instructional practices to improve teaching and student learning.
  • Communicates frequently with families, providing information about:
    • The instruction and learning that is taking place in the classroom.
    • The academic and social‑emotional progress of individual students.
    • How families can participate in their students’ learning.
Desired Qualifications
  • Current and valid Illinois Professional Educator License with a music endorsement applicable to the grade level assigned.
  • Ability to assess the learning of students and modify or enhance instruction as needed.
  • Ability to analyze various forms of data and use the information to make instructional decisions.
  • Individual must be able to incorporate technology to enhance instruction.
  • Able to work with a diverse student population and establish open and regular communication with parents and guardians.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
