Job Summary

Under general direction of the Superintendent, the Principal is responsible for the instructional and managerial leadership, administration and coordination of an elementary school.

Essential Functions
  • Ensure the implementation of an educational environment that meets the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical needs of primary and intermediate students.
  • Provide leadership to ensure understanding and implementation of the mission, vision, and core values contained within the District's strategic plan.
  • Direct and collaboratively design and implement a continuous improvement process, including a school improvement plan, school improvement leadership team, teacher level team processes, utilization of a variety of data and evidence of effectiveness, and monitoring of implementation.
  • Administer an articulated elementary curriculum program; conduct regular needs assessments and interpret results to staff and community.
  • Keep abreast of developments and trends in elementary curriculum and instruction, and provide leadership in determining program direction and improvement to curriculum and instruction at the building level in collaboration with District administration.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to implement a comprehensive MTSS framework, including identification, assessment, and monitoring of students receiving intervention services and supervise regular team meetings.
  • Lead, observe, support, and collaborate with building teams in the analysis of student data, and lead professional development that improves instructional practices.
  • Screen, select, assign, supervise and evaluate performance of certified and educational support staff, including contracted personnel, and provide leadership for assistant principals in the same.
  • Lead the coordination and work of specialized group of educators (nurses, psychologists, social workers, speech clinicians, etc.).
  • Supervise all matters related to supporting substitute teachers within the building.
  • Provide leadership in the development, supervision and management of the site operations and systems to ensure safety and efficiency;
    Ensure coordinated use of building facilities for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide vision and leadership of efforts to build and maintain family-school partnerships and engagement.
  • Consult with District leaders to facilitate programs and operations in the building, including cleaning, maintenance, nutritional services, co-curricular activities, and building usage.
  • Provide leadership, supervise and manage in the supervision and management of the all site operations to assure safety and efficiency, including the supervision and documentation of investigations of disturbances and emergencies, crisis management and proactive safety measures (ie: drills) in collaboration with District leadership.
  • Ensure appropriate record keeping, communications, and processes related to student attendance, within the building and with District level leaders.
  • Secure and collaborate with community partners;
    Communicate effectively with the business and residential community and participate in civic activities.
  • Lead planning and execution of a student activities calendar, including special events that build school climate and enhance and highlight student learning.
  • Supervise coordination of student transportation needs of students in cooperation with District leaders.
  • Supervise all aspects of the co-curricular program, including clubs and activities.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director of Student Services to facilitate special education and other student services in the building.
  • Implement a responsive learning environment through mutually respectful relationships with all stakeholders, including a positive, proactive and effective student discipline policy, rooted in restorative practices.
  • Motivate employee performance and enhance morale.
  • Maintain a commitment to ongoing growth in self and others, supporting and participating in District and site professional growth programs.
  • Administer a balanced budget and operate a school using a collaborative management system.
  • Coordinate the assignment of student teachers within the building, including orientation of the student teachers, working with supervising teachers, university supervisors and Human Resources.
  • Organize and supervise the procurement, issuance, maintenance, collection and storage of instructional materials; supervise the collection of all student fees, fines and other obligations; and maintain accurate student records.
  • Supervise development of master schedules and calendars, to maximize the achievement of program objectives, and direct the registration and placement process for students at the building level.
