Job Summary

Graduate teaching assistants are generally assigned to assist with course instruction. The nature of the assistance can involve a variety of activities:

  • Serve as a primary or secondary teaching instructor in a class or laboratory.
  • Meet with and/or tutor students, hold office hours, prepare instructional materials, and assist during class and/or laboratory.
  • Grade student assignments that require knowledge of subjects taught in a class or laboratory.
  • Assist with other instructional related activities in the department.

    Required Qualifications
  • B.S. degree in Economics or related fields.
  • GPA of 3.0 or better.
  • State law mandates demonstrable oral proficiency in the English language as a requirement for this position. Applicants should have a currently valid minimum speaking score of 26 on the TOEFL internet‑based test (iBT) or an overall IELTS score of 8. The Duolingo English Test cannot be used to satisfy the English language requirement.

    Finalists for graduate teaching positions may have an interview with the Department of Economics.

    Each application must be accompanied by a statement of purpose (200‑word maximum) explaining the following:

  • The applicant's professional goals and how a master's degree in Applied Economics will help the applicant achieve those goals;
  • The applicant's interest in any sub‑field of Economics and preference for working with any of the faculty within the Department of Economics;
  • The applicant's professional experience (work, international, volunteer/community service);
  • Computer and statistical skills, special courses/training, courses in economics, statistics, econometrics, and research methods. If an applicant already provided this statement to the Department of Economics through an admissions application, it does not need to be provided again.

    Illinois State University student employees are restricted to no more than 28 hours per week of on‑campus employment across all positions. International students are restricted by their visa status to no more than 20 hours per week of on‑campus employment when the university is in session, but may work up to 28 hours per week when the university is not in session.
