Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Manager
Location: Greater Chicago Area (South Suburbs)
A leading heavy industrial manufacturing organization is seeking a hands‑on Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Manager to lead site environmental compliance, safety programs, and continuous improvement initiatives at a large 24/7 production facility.
This role is highly visible within plant leadership and is ideal for an HSE professional who thrives in a floor‑based manufacturing environment and has strong technical environmental compliance expertise, particularly with air permitting and regulatory reporting.
Key Responsibilities- Lead all site health, safety, and environmental compliance activities
- Manage environmental permitting, reporting, and documentation programs including:
- Stormwater/NPDES
- Waste and hazardous waste programs
- Environmental recordkeeping and compliance reporting
- Serve as primary liaison with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies
- Drive plant safety culture through active floor presence and leadership engagement
- Lead safety meetings, audits, inspections, investigations, and corrective actions
- Develop and implement HSE procedures, training programs, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Partner closely with operations leadership to improve safety and compliance performance
- Ensure accuracy and timeliness of environmental reporting and compliance documentation
- Support risk assessments and incident prevention initiatives
- 5+ years of HSE experience within a heavy industrial or manufacturing environment
- Strong environmental compliance background with direct air permitting experience
- Experience managing regulatory reporting and agency interactions
- Hands‑on plant‑floor leadership style with strong operational presence
- Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and environmental compliance standards
- Experience with HSE management systems, investigations, and risk assessments
- Continuous improvement experience (Lean/Six Sigma exposure preferred)
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Safety, Engineering, Science, or related field preferred
- Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of degree
- On‑site plant‑based role
