Position Title: ENV PROT ENGINEER IV
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is hiring an Environmental Protection Engineer IV for the Office of Mines and Minerals. The role includes design and construction management of Abandoned Mine Lands Reclamation (AMLRD) reclamation projects, engineering work, developing reclamation plans, and overseeing construction to utilize federal AML funds and eliminate public safety hazards and environmental degradation.
Essential Functions- Under direction of the Abandoned Mine Lands Reclamation Division Manager for Northern/Central Illinois, serve as a professional engineer for engineering work in the region.
- Investigate site conditions to determine safety and environmental hazards on abandoned mined land.
- Oversee inspection of awarded reclamation contracts to ensure construction is completed according to plans and specifications.
- Work with engineers, geologists, and other technical staff on complex multi‑problem projects.
- Attend developmental technical training classes provided by the U.S. Department of Interior Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned that are reasonably within the scope of the enumerated duties.
- Four years of college with a bachelor’s degree in an engineering science.
- Possession of an Illinois certificate as a registered professional engineer.
- Four years of professional engineering experience related to complex engineering problems; a master’s degree in engineering or business administration may substitute for two years of experience.
- Four years of professional civil engineering experience in reclamation of abandoned mine lands.
- Extensive knowledge of methods, procedures, and techniques for site investigation and analysis of soils, water, and vegetation.
- Working knowledge of environmental factors and application of theory, principles, and practices to design reclamation solutions.
- Working knowledge of methods, procedures, and techniques for preparing detailed construction plans and specifications.
- Working knowledge of the physical and chemical processes of acidity generation at abandoned mine sites and methods to eliminate and mitigate acid mine drainage.
- Working knowledge of IDOT standard specifications, construction management, inspection and documentation, and familiarity with construction equipment and methods.
- Four years of experience in planning, organization, and project management to manage multiple projects and prepare and maintain project files and reports.
- Strong communication skills, able to convey Division plans, policies, and regulations to staff, landowners, consultants, and the public.
- Four years of experience coordinating and providing technical assistance to other staff.
