Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking an Environmental Engineer I to independently perform detailed engineering surveys, review assessments, and assist in technical reviews, planning, and enforcement related to swimming pools, recreation areas, and bathing beaches. The Engineer will conduct non‑routine investigations in response to complaints, contamination, or illness.

Essential Functions
  • Receive formal training on evaluating complex engineering plans for swimming facilities and bathing beaches under the Program Manager.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports of assessments, inspections, and investigations for supervisory review.
  • Assist with review of licensure applications.
  • Participate in conferences with regulated entities and the public to explain statutory requirements and regulatory compliance.
  • Attend and complete mandatory knowledge‑based and practical training required by Office of Health Protection SOPs and program requirements.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned within the scope of duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Four (4) years college completion with a bachelor’s degree in engineering and coursework in sanitary, public health, or environmental engineering.
Preferred Qualifications
  • ABET‑accredited engineering degree.
  • Six (6) months of experience conducting detailed on‑site professional environmental engineering investigations and studies.
  • Six (6) months of experience preparing detailed technical engineering reports on investigation findings and corrective action.
  • Six (6) months of experience performing reviews of licensure applications.
  • Six (6) months of experience in environmental field sampling equipment and chemical and bacteriological testing techniques.
  • Six (6) months of experience responding to routine public inquiries regarding program regulations, requirements, and policies.
  • Six (6) months of work experience using Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
