Job Description & How to Apply Below
Position: GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER (CIVIL ENGINEER III)

Geotechnical Engineer (Civil Engineer III)

This position provides structural engineers with geotechnical recommendations on typical to complex projects so that the most cost effective, safe, and durable structure is constructed. This is accomplished by performing typical to complex analyses to design or review and approve consultant designed foundations supporting bridges, retaining walls, culverts, and other traffic structures. The incumbent provides foundation and geotechnical design parameters, plan modifications, and specification input to the structural engineer so the contract documents do not create construction delays or contractor claims.

In addition, this position assists districts, contractors, consultants, and in-house structural engineers in responding to or resolving soil-related design and construction problems.

Essential functions include preparing and/or reviewing consultant structural geotechnical reports, reviewing foundations and geotechnical aspects of structural consultant and in-house plans, reviewing construction submittals, designing typical to complex single shaft foundations, and performing duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.

Minimum qualifications include completion of a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an ABET accredited college, or a current Illinois Engineer Intern Certificate, or a current Professional Engineer license in the state of Illinois, or a current Structural Engineer License in the state of Illinois. Those applying with only a degree must have a minimum of 2.0 (out of 4.0) cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA).

If cumulative GPA is between 2.0 and 2.5 (out of 4.0), applicants must also possess a current Illinois Engineer Intern Certificate OR a current Professional Engineer license in the state of Illinois OR a current Structural Engineer License in the state of Illinois. Thirty-seven (37) months of experience in civil engineering is also required.

Preferred qualifications include working knowledge of modern methods and techniques as related to bridges and structures, ability to supervise and inspect the work of contractors on major engineering projects in accordance with plans and specifications, working knowledge of engineering software, and good oral and written communication skills.

Conditions of employment include requiring a valid driver's license, requiring occasional statewide travel that may include overnight stays, and requiring successful completion of a background screening. Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position.
