Traffic Services Technician (Engineering Technician IV)

Position Overview

This position is accountable for the development, coordination and evaluation of experimental traffic control products; the preparation and distribution of special Bureau of Operations maps, both on-line and hard copy; assistance with updating the Department of Transportation's (IDOT) on-line Road Construction Map; maintaining the Designated Truck Route Map; developing Illinois specific highway sign standards; issuing blanket bonds for access and utility permits;

providing Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) support to the Bureau of Operations; assisting with traffic engineering studies; and publication and distribution of manuals, booklets, reports, policies, and maps for the Bureau of Operations.

Essential Functions

  • Maintains a personal working knowledge of traffic operations.
  • Evaluates new traffic control device products for use in conjunction with traffic related problems.
  • Develops and conducts detailed traffic control product evaluation studies related to traffic control devices.
  • Recommends to the Engineering and Standards Unit Chief policy and procedural changes based on information gained from product evaluations and traffic engineering studies.
  • Assists with updating the Illinois Department of Transportation's (IDOT) On-Line Road Construction Map and maintains IDOT's Designated Truck Route Map, Ensures the timely and accurate publication and distribution of Bureau of Operations' reports, policies, rules, manuals, etc. related to this position.
  • Issues and tracks blanket bonds for access and utility permits.
  • Maintains the Illinois Standard Highway Signs Book and IDOT Highway Signs Catalog with the latest Illinois standard highway sign designs.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.
  • Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum PLUS five years of engineering experience. OR Seven years of engineering experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Working knowledge of Esri desktop and web-based software such as Arc Map and ArcGIS online. Working knowledge of SignCAD and Micro Station for Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD). Strong oral and written communication. Strong organization skills enabling effective prioritization, planning and management of tasks and projects.

Conditions of Employment

Requires a valid driver's license. Requires occasional travel to fields or district offices for traffic control device evaluation. Requires successful completion of a background screening. Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position. As a result, the employee should be aware that if offered non-State employment during state employment or within one year immediately after ending State employment, the employee shall, prior to accepting any such non-State employment offer, notify the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor (OEIG) or may be subject to a fine.
