USD $27.00/Hr. to USD $39.86/Hr. (salary range).

Overview

$20,000 Sign on Bonus Available.

Previous Surgical Technologist experience and/or successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program is REQUIRED.

New Graduate Surg Tech students, and Surg Tech students enrolled in the 2nd year of an accredited Surgical Technologist program are encouraged to apply!

The Main Operating Room Surgical Technologist performs “scrub” technologist duties for scheduled surgeries in the Main Operating Room, assists with draping and utilization of instruments for a given surgery, and supports sterile technique and sterilization procedures. Education Qualifications
  • Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program and/or previous Surgical Technologist experience is REQUIRED.
  • Completion of Anatomy and Physiology classes preferred.
  • High School graduate or equivalent required.
  • Attends JCAHO, OSHA, and hospital/nurse manager-specified mandatory in-services.
  • Obtains four contact hours in area of interest.
Licensure/Certification /Registry
  • Maintains current CPR certification
  • Surgical Technologist Certification preferred
Experience
  • Previous experience in multiple surgical specialties is preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Performs duties in capacity of “scrub” technologist as prescribed by hospital policies and procedures.
  • Sets room for routine, uncomplicated procedures with supplies and equipment in 5-15 minutes.
  • Sets room for complicated or multi-procedure cases requiring many special supplies in 30 minutes.
  • Assists circulator in checking equipment and obtaining supplies prior to bringing the patient to the room.
  • Maintains basic knowledge of instrumentation and its appropriate use.
  • Checks instrumentation for cleanliness, function, correct number of pieces, and completeness of the tray.
  • Allows adequate time for preparation of supplies and counting (routine case ~15 minutes, complicated case ~30-40 minutes).
  • Has basic knowledge of surgical procedures.
  • Organizes and maintains neat mayo, instrument, and back tables.
  • Anticipates sequence of instrumentation and prepares accordingly.
  • Properly identifies medications.
  • Handles floor stock medications or medications delivered from pharmacy and relocates to designated secure storage locations or delivers to licensed staff.
  • Keeps track of sponges, needles, and instruments during the procedure.
  • Relays accurate identification of specimens and cultures.
  • Organizes and assists in end-of-case cleanup; separates sharp and delicate instruments during cleanup.
  • Assists in pulling cases and maintaining a safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Applies aseptic principles (scrub length, OR attire, gowning, gloving, draping).
  • Checks sterile supplies for proper packaging and dating; reports breaks in sterile technique.
  • Requests assistance from Sterile Processing as needed for instrument preparation.
  • Follows universal precautions for blood- and body-fluid exposures at all times.
  • Prevents loss of instruments by thorough drape checks before disposal.
  • Contributes to orderly OR function and team collaboration.
  • Takes initiative to update and maintain surgical skills (e.g., requesting certain cases, attending in-services).
  • Assists in checking to-follow cases for completeness and accuracy; participates in orientation of new personnel.
  • Participates as a permanent team member and updates surgeon’s preference list.
  • Reports to assigned room on time and follows disaster plans and hospital/unit policies and behavior expectations.
  • Uses designated lines of communication and readily assists coworkers to facilitate patient care.
  • Attends 65 percent or a minimum of 6 unit staff meetings per year (or as directed); participates in mandatory in-services.
  • Initiates appropriate intraoperative behaviors if trained to do so as a first assistant.
  • Provides hemostasis to reduce postoperative infection risk and fluid volume deficit as directed by the surgeon.
  • Provides exposure of the operative site using retractors and other instruments; assists with suctioning and sponging.
  • Uses surgical instrumentation skillfully as directed by the surgeon and handles tissue to minimize injury.
  • Sutures tissue with appropriate materials and techniques.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
