Position: Medical Assistant, Ambulatory Float Pool, South - Full-Time, Days

Job Description

Be a part of a world‑class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine Medical Group, as a Medical Assistant with our Ambulatory Float Pool team. You will work in our South Region including Chicago (Beverly), Flossmoor, Calumet City, Tinley Park, Homewood, Lansing, and Harvey, IL. This position is 100% onsite. You must be based in the greater Chicagoland area. Local travel is required.

Job Functions
  • Patient care responsibilities: checking schedules, organizing patient flow, accompanying patients to exam/procedure rooms, assisting with walking transfers, dressing, collecting specimens (including blood draws if required), preparing for exam, collecting patient history, performing screenings per provider guidelines, assisting physicians/nurses with various procedures, charting, relaying instructions to patients/families, answering calls, and providing pertinent information.
  • Clerical responsibilities: sending/receiving patient medical records, obtaining lab/X‑ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, completing forms, receptionist coverage when required, scheduling appointments, billing and coding for insurance when applicable, verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics, collecting co‑pays, managing and updating charts.
  • Environmental responsibilities: setting up instruments and equipment per practice protocols, cleaning exam/procedure rooms and instruments between visits, maintaining infection control, cleaning sterilizers, ordering, sorting, storing supplies, restocking rooms.
  • Organizational responsibilities: respecting/promoting patient rights, responding appropriately to emergency codes, sharing problems with supervisor.
  • Clinical medical assisting responsibilities (state law variable): asepsis, sterilization, instrument wrapping, autoclaving, checking vital signs, physical exam prep, clinical pharmacology, drug administration, prescription verification, minor surgery assistance, biohazard waste disposal, therapeutic modalities, patient instruction, laboratory procedures, OSHA guidelines, quality control, CLIA‑waived testing, specimen handling, ECG, emergency triage, first aid.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of a certified medical assistant program.
  • Active BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Phlebotomy training; phlebotomist license and work experience if required.
  • Minimum of one year of recent experience in a medical office/facility.
  • Experience with practice specialty.
  • Able to partner with teams in small to large practice groups.
  • Certified Medical Assistant.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong verbal communication, prioritization, and organizational skills.
  • General PC skills:
    Excel, Word, EPIC.
  • Computerized appointment scheduling experience.
  • Ability to handle stress in fast‑paced environments.
  • Discretion, tact, courtesy in handling sensitive patient interactions.
  • Physical ability to perform stocking, lifting and transporting supplies and instruments.

Compensation offered may vary based on qualifications and experience. Pay ranges for employees subject to collective bargaining agreements are negotiated by the medical center.
