Medical Records Technician III – Health Information Management
Join one of the nation’s most comprehensive academic medical centers, UChicago Medicine, as a Medical Records Technician III in the Health Information Management department. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.
Under minimal direction, assists the physicians and medical center in the record completion processes to ensure compliance with licensing, regulatory and accrediting agencies. Performs and coordinates release of information processes internal and external to the HIM Department and Medical Center.
Essential Job Functions- Assists in the record completion cycle to ensure compliance with regulatory, licensing, and accrediting agencies by analyzing and validating deficiencies in electronic and hardcopy medical records, assisting physicians in their record completion activities, processing transcribed documents, preparing notification letters and reports for the Medical Staff and Administration.
- Coordinates release of information requests through direct patient or other customer contact via telephone, incoming mail, on-line computer system, or internal department.
- Maintain patient confidentiality as required by Medical Center, departmental and industry/legal standards.
- Corrects/deletes data entry errors or omissions associated with tasks performed in electronic systems.
- Keeps the work area neat and clean; properly cares for equipment.
- Performs other related tasks as may be deemed necessary for the effective and efficient function of the HIM areas.
- High School diploma or GED
- 2-3 years of previous health information management experience in an acute care facility as a Medical Record Technician III or similar position
- Attention to detail to differentiate patient demographic information, forms, visit types and numbers
- Medical Terminology training required or successful completion within 9 months of employment
- Strong key entry and/or typing skills with CRT and/or PC experience
- Advanced knowledge of medical-legal rules and regulations that govern confidentiality and release of medical information
- Proficient in multiple computer systems within an acute care hospital and health information management department
- Must have strong skills in independently prioritizing and accurately performing a variety of duties of increasing responsibility within a system that has frequently changing assignments, priorities, and deadlines
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills required; high level of diplomacy in customer interactions required. Professional telephone skills
- Must be able to work independently with self-discipline and in a team environment
- Strong scanning skills
- Scanning Quality consistent experience
- Understanding of medical record documents
- Familiar with licensing, accrediting, and regulatory requirements as they relate to health information management record completion
- Experience with external release of information

In this role, we anticipate that you will generally work approximately 40 hours per week. You will be scheduled to work the first shift, from approximately 8am-4:30pm and will not be scheduled for on-call shifts. You will be scheduled to work 100% at the Hyde Park campus. You will be scheduled to work on weekdays (Monday-Friday).

The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position. The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity.
Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
