Job Description
Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT), Pediatrics Full‑Time Night Shift – University of Chicago Medicine, Hyde Park, Chicago, IL. This role supports adult or pediatric/neonatal patient populations and may include student opportunities.
Job SummaryAs a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT), you will administer respiratory care treatments, procedures, and protocols under the supervision of department leadership and physicians. You will assess cardiopulmonary status, implement appropriate care protocols, and maintain/improve cardiopulmonary hemodynamic status. You will also initiate and maintain emergent and non‑emergent ventilation strategies as per department policies.
Essential Job Functions- Administer supplemental oxygen/medical gas therapy per physician orders or established protocols and accurately document in the EPIC electronic medical record.
- Administer intermittent or continuous medication delivery therapy (bronchodilators, steroid therapy, mucolytics, etc.) as prescribed and document in real time.
- Administer bronchopulmonary hygiene, suctioning, and airway care procedures, including airway clearance techniques per physician orders or protocols; document accordingly.
- Initiate and maintain non‑invasive ventilation procedures (BIPAP, CPAP, High Flow Cannula), assess patient status, adjust settings for comfort, and document in EPIC.
- Initiate, maintain, and check status of mechanical ventilation per policy, assess patients for weaning plans, and document accurately in EPIC.
- Manage ventilator settings for NIV and mechanical ventilation; monitor hemodynamic parameters and document in EPIC.
- Perform arterial blood gas analysis in select areas, troubleshoot analyzers, perform quality control, and report results promptly.
- Assist with patient transport within the facility while patients remain on oxygen or ventilator support.
- Graduate of an approved and accredited Respiratory Care Program (minimum two years).
- Diploma or Certificate of Completion and Associate’s Degree from an accredited academic body.
- Effective verbal and written communication and documentation skills.
- Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care.
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from the NBRC within 180 days of hire.
- Licensed by the State of Illinois as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
- Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program, PALS, or ACLS certification preferred, depending on patient population.
