Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to perform complex technical and advisory functions to evaluate quality, completeness, and validity of cancer data, to identify program problems and prepare methods to alleviate the problems.

Essential Functions
  • Subject to administrative approval, plans, directs, and coordinates all activities of the Illinois State Cancer Registry (ISCR), including field operations, biomedical coding, and data management.
  • Using independent judgment, coordinates and reviews the functions of the ISCR management staff.
  • Serves as working supervisor.
  • Conducts studies of ISCR operations. Establishes quantitative and qualitative standards to evaluate the program.
  • Establishes and maintains good working relationships with reporting hospitals, medical institutions, other state registries, other divisions of IDPH, other state agencies, and staff in national standard setting and cancer registration organizations.
  • Attends management meetings, provides updates to Division Chief regarding the status of the registry, upcoming deadlines and issues related to data collection.
  • Prepares or assists in preparation of proposed legislation and Administrative Rules for ISCR. Writes grant proposals and progress reports for funding to support ISCR.
  • Maintains personal continuing education program as related to current literature in the field. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years college with courses in health information management, nursing or medical science.
  • Requires four (4) years of progressively responsible administrative experience in a hospital tumor registry program or comparable experience.
  • Requires certification by the National Cancer Registrars Association as a Certified Tumor Registrar.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Four (4) years of experience in cancer registration program management, principles, standards and methods.
  • Three (3) years of tumor registry supervisory and program management experience.
  • Three (3) years of experience exercising sound judgment in analyzing, appraising, evaluating and solving problems related to cancer registration.
  • Three (3) years of experience establishing and maintaining public contacts and working relationships with reporting facilities, cancer registrar organizations, and staff in national standards setting organizations.
