The Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists (AAIM) is a dedicated organization focused on preventing impaired driving and supporting victims of impaired and distracted driving crashes across Illinois since 1982. As the first grassroots citizen group of its kind in Illinois, AAIM has led initiatives including crash victim support, legislative advocacy, public education, and financial assistance to those affected by impaired-driving incidents. AAIM is committed to raising awareness about the consequences of intoxicated and irresponsible driving, underage drinking, and other dangerous driving behaviors.

Overview

The Prevention and Education Specialist is responsible for implementing and supporting road safety initiatives and substance misuse prevention programs that align with AAIM's mission. This position plays a critical role in reducing underage drinking, impaired, distracted, and reckless driving through high school classrooms and community education, evidence-based programming, coalition collaboration, and public awareness campaigns.

This role requires strong communication skills, experience in prevention education, and a deep understanding of public health approaches to safety and behavioral change.

Key Responsibilities

Plan and deliver educational programs in high schools and community events focused on the prevention of underage drinking, impaired and distracted driving, cannabis use, related behaviors, and traffic safety.

Collaborate with coalitions and stakeholders to support diverse, culturally competent community-based prevention initiatives.

Lead classroom presentations, assemblies, and parent-educator events to expand AAIM's reach.

Work with the program director to assist with a monthly newsletter, plan campaigns such as Distracted Driving Awareness, Alcohol Awareness Month, National Night Out, and Beyond Driver Education.

Build relationships with schools, driver education providers, health coalitions, and local law enforcement.

Encourage student-led groups and peer-to-peer traffic safety engagement, including SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions).

Conduct community assessments and develop strategic plans based on identified priorities.

Collect pre-/post-evaluation surveys, track engagement, and submit monthly reports and outcome data.

Organize and support prevention-based community events, town halls, and health fairs.

Promote AAIM services and mission through media, newsletters, and social channels.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Education, Social Work, or related field preferred.

CPS (Certified Prevention Specialist) preferred but not required.

Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.

Comfort with multicultural audiences and ability to build youth and adult partnerships.

Proficient in Microsoft Office; familiarity with Google Drive, Canva, and digital tools a plus.

Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed for events and outreach.

Reporting and Management

Reports to the Director of Prevention and Education.

Submits monthly time sheets, activity logs, and evaluation data.

Participates in required trainings and statewide meetings.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary: $51,000 per year during a 6‑month probationary period; increases to $54,000 per year upon successful completion of probation (approx. $24.50–$26.00/hr equivalent).
