Overview
Nurse Manager - Admissions & Testing, 1C. The Nurse Manager operates within the Springfield Memorial Hospital and Nursing Division mission, vision, strategic priorities and goals. Utilizing a shared leadership philosophy, the Nurse Manager assumes accountability for department management and the quality of patient care in a designated department. The Nurse Manager creates and maintains a work environment conducive to effective communication, collaboration, teambuilding and nursing professionalism.
She/he ensures the enculturation of the Magnet Program requirements in the department. She/he assures that care provided in the department is appropriate to the age of the patients served and that staff are competent to provide safe, quality, evidence-based nursing care. She/he maintains positive physician and interdepartmental relationships as well as positive employee morale. Embodies the Memorial Health Values of Safety, Integrity, Quality, and Stewardship that support our mission and vision.
Education
- BSN required;
Master’s degree preferred.
Licensure/Certification/Registry
- Current Illinois RN licensure required.
- Holds national specialty nursing certification in clinical area or nursing administration, or completes within 24 months of assuming role.
Experience
- At least three years experience in acute care nursing as a registered nurse with demonstrated progressive leadership/management skills.
Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Demonstrated working knowledge of the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program model and standards.
- Demonstrated understanding of nurse-sensitive quality indicators and basic hospital/nursing regulatory requirements.
- Leadership: lead and model professional nursing practice; empower staff to improve patient-focused care and outcomes.
- Personal and Professional Growth: pursue ongoing education and development; provide peer feedback and foster staff growth.
- Clinical Knowledge: maintain understanding of unit patient populations and current clinical practices; lead unit-based changes to improve patient care delivery.
- Collaborative Practice: promote inter-departmental collaboration and build relationships with medical staff to support problem solving and shared decision making.
- Communication: facilitate open, honest communication; ensure staff are informed about changes and issues affecting work processes.
- Human Resources: recruit, interview, select and retain unit-based staff; manage scheduling within budget; monitor performance and take corrective action as needed; conduct regular staff meetings; recognize staff achievements; support risk-taking that benefits patient care.
- Fiscal Management: participate in annual budget preparation; identify capital items and staffing needs; monitor expenditures and implement corrective actions; design cost-effective strategies for patient care delivery; educate staff on unit operations and fiscal responsibilities.
- Planning and Performance: establish annual unit goals aligned with MMC’s Strategic Priorities and nursing goals; monitor progress and adjust plans as needed.
- Quality and Research: identify quality improvement opportunities; lead problem solving; evaluate standards of care; gather and use unit performance data to improve quality and efficiency; support nursing research and scholarship activities.
- Planning and Compliance: ensure safety, courtesy, quality, and efficiency standards are met in daily operations.
