Director of Ecommerce Merchandising / Senior Buyer Position Summary
The Ecommerce Buyer is responsible for developing and executing the online assortment strategy to drive sales, margin, and inventory productivity across the ecommerce channel. This role partners closely with merchandising, planning, marketing, and supply chain teams to curate compelling assortments, optimize inventory, and ensure a seamless and profitable customer experience online.
Key Responsibilities Assortment Strategy & Buying- Own end-to-end buying for assigned ecommerce categories, including assortment planning, vendor selection, and purchase order execution.
- Develop online-exclusive and channel-optimized assortments aligned with brand strategy and customer insights.
- Identify trends, customer demand, and competitive opportunities to inform buying decisions.
- Partner with vendors to negotiate cost, terms, exclusives, and promotional support.
- Manage sales, margin, and inventory KPIs, including sell-through, turns, and markdown performance.
- Partner with Inventory Planning to forecast demand and manage inventory flow to support ecommerce fulfillment.
- Execute markdown and promotional strategies to maximize profitability and inventory productivity.
- Monitor performance daily and react quickly to trends, risks, and opportunities.
- Collaborate with Ecommerce Merchandising to ensure optimal product presentation, pricing, and promotional execution.
- Support site strategies including new product launches, seasonal refreshes, and category updates.
- Analyze onsite performance metrics (conversion, AOV, traffic) to improve category results.
- Partner with Marketing on featured product placement, campaigns, and events.
- Work closely with Planning, Marketing, Supply Chain, Creative, and Technology teams to deliver a best-in-class online experience.
- Partner with stores and omnichannel teams to support integrated inventory and fulfillment strategies.
- Communicate category performance, risks, and opportunities to leadership.
- Bachelor’s degree in Merchandising, Business, Marketing, or related field.
- 3–6 years of buying or merchandising experience, preferably in ecommerce or omnichannel retail.
- Strong understanding of ecommerce metrics, digital merchandising, and customer behavior.
- Proven ability to manage inventory, margin, and promotional strategies in a fast-paced environment.
- Advanced analytical skills with strong proficiency in Excel; experience with ERP, OMS, or ecommerce platforms preferred.
- Excellent negotiation, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and results driven.
- Experience in [apparel / home / beauty / specialty retail].
- Experience with online-only assortments or marketplace buying.
- Familiarity with analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics, Adobe Analytics).
