Outside Sales Representative – Chicagoland
Overview:We are seeking a driven, relationship-focused Outside Sales Representative to manage and grow a defined territory across the Chicagoland market. This role is responsible for developing new business while maintaining and expanding existing customer relationships within manufacturing, fabrication, and OEM environments.
About the Role:This position focuses on selling flat-rolled steel products (sheet, coil, and value-added processed materials) to a diverse customer base. The ideal candidate is a true hunter with the ability to generate new opportunities while managing a book of business in a fast-paced, transactional sales environment.
Key Responsibilities:- Develop new business through consistent prospecting, cold calling, and in-person customer visits
- Manage and grow an existing customer base across manufacturing, fabrication, and industrial accounts
- Sell a range of flat roll steel products including hot rolled, cold rolled, coated, and processed materials
- Work closely with inside sales, operations, and supply chain teams to ensure timely delivery and customer satisfaction
- Quote pricing, negotiate terms, and manage margins in a competitive market
- Maintain strong knowledge of market pricing, mill availability, and industry trends
- Provide solutions based on customer production needs, timelines, and specifications
- Travel regularly throughout the territory (typically 3–4 days/week in the field)
- 2–10+ years of B2B outside sales experience (steel, metals, industrial distribution, or adjacent industries preferred)
- Strong hunter mentality with proven ability to generate new business
- Experience calling on manufacturers, fabricators, or OEMs is highly preferred
- Ability to manage pricing, margins, and high-volume transactional sales
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
- Self-motivated with the ability to operate independently in a territory
- Consistently building pipeline through daily prospecting activity
- Growing territory volume (tons/month) and gross profit
- Establishing long-term partnerships with key accounts
- Becoming a trusted resource for customers’ material needs and supply chain planning
- Base salary + uncapped commission (tied to gross profit/volume)
- Established book of business with additional upside for new growth
