Position OverviewThe Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Division of Laboratories, Inorganic Analysis Unit, at the Springfield Combined Laboratory seeks a Laboratory Associate I. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, detail‑oriented, and able to adapt to shifting priorities in a collaborative, fast‑paced laboratory setting. The candidate will perform lab techniques and work with hazardous chemicals, and will communicate effectively verbally, written, and electronically with both internal team members and external stakeholders.
EssentialFunctions
- Prepare environmental extracts/digestions from soil, water, wastes, and fish tissue samples in accordance with SOPs and established laboratory QC procedures utilizing several different techniques, including but not limited to acid digest, liquid–liquid, solid phase, and accelerated solvent extractor.
- Prepare environmental samples for analyses involving a variety of analytical techniques in accordance with SOPs and QC directives for detecting analytes of concern in trace concentrations.
- Follow new testing procedures for the analyses of environmental samples as directed.
- Conduct maintenance and calibration of equipment including meters and probes used for analyses.
- Perform other duties reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
- Associate degree with laboratory science courses.
- Upward Mobility Program employees may waive requirements upon successful completion of proficiency tests and training programs.
- Basic knowledge of principles and practices of chemistry, biology, physics, or related sciences.
- Basic knowledge of laboratory procedures and techniques.
- Ability to use laboratory equipment safely to perform routine and standard laboratory tests.
- Overtime is a condition of employment, requiring the ability to work evenings and weekends.
- Requires a name‑based background check.
8:30 AM – 5:00 PM Monday to Friday, 1 hr lunch.
