Primary Duties and ResponsibilitiesWe are seeking qualified candidates for two apprenticeship positions:
Instrument Apprentice and Power Plant Apprentice
- Assist in troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of industrial control systems and instrumentation
- Work with boiler processes, turbines, scrubber controls, CEM, and analytical instrumentation
- Support PLCs, DCS, and digital and analog control systems
- Assist with repair of control boards down to the component level
- Support maintenance of variable frequency drives (VFDs), SCR drives, and DC drives
- Assist with conduit installation, wiring, and terminations
- Learn to interpret schematics, technical manuals, and construction drawings
- Apply algebraic formulas for equipment calibration
- Complete material, service, and maintenance requisitions
- Assist with troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of electrical and control systems
- Work with motor control circuits, circuit breakers, motors, VFDs, SCR drives, PLCs, and HVAC equipment
- Support installation of conduit, wiring, and new electrical equipment
- Complete material and maintenance requisitions
- Safely operate overhead cranes
The ideal candidate will be a high school graduate or GED equivalent, have unrestricted 20/20 eyesight (vision correctable to 20/20 accepted) with no color blindness, a valid driver’s license at time of background, and demonstrate the self-motivation necessary to independently complete the apprenticeship program, which requires 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and a minimum of 576 hours of coursework while working under the guidance of a designated supervisor and foreman;
and successfully complete all CWLP/IBEW JATC on-the-job training and coursework. Applicants must provide an application, a passing score of 6 or greater on the NJATC exam. Next available test date:

Applicants who can verify (by providing undisputable evidence) that they are participating in and in good standing, or have completed an accredited electrical apprenticeship recognized by the Electrical Training Alliance, and whose program utilized the ETA aptitude test requiring a score of 6 or better to enter said apprenticeship program, may qualify for a direct interview as determined by the JATC if apprenticeship opportunities are available.
Preference for employment in all positions with the city shall be given to applicants who are full-time city residents.
