A Solar Electrician is responsible for installing, wiring, and commissioning electrical components of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on residential and commercial properties. This role ensures that solar systems are installed safely, meet all electrical codes, and operate properly once connected to the electrical service. The Solar Electrician works closely with installation crews, project managers, and inspectors to complete solar installations that meet company standards and local code requirements.
Role OverviewA Solar Electrician is responsible for installing, wiring, and commissioning electrical components of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on residential and commercial properties. This role ensures that solar systems are installed safely, meet all electrical codes, and operate properly once connected to the electrical service. The Solar Electrician works closely with installation crews, project managers, and inspectors to complete solar installations that meet company standards and local code requirements.
Key Responsibilities- Install electrical components of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems including inverters, disconnects, wiring, and grounding systems
- Perform electrical tie-ins to residential and commercial electrical service panels
- Install and wire solar inverters, combiner boxes, AC/DC disconnects, and monitoring equipment
- Install and connect battery storage systems when applicable
- Ensure all electrical work complies with the National Electrical Code (NEC), local codes, and AHJ requirements
- Coordinate with installation crew members to complete rooftop and ground-mounted solar installations
- Pull wire, run conduit, and complete electrical terminations for solar systems
- Verify proper grounding and bonding of all solar system components
- Perform system testing and assist with commissioning of installed solar systems
- Troubleshoot electrical issues during installation and initial system startup
- Work with inspectors and utility representatives during inspections when required
- Document electrical work and provide installation photos for permitting and project documentation
- Follow all company safety policies and OSHA guidelines, including proper use of ladders, PPE, and fall protection equipment
- Maintain tools, equipment, and work vehicles in safe operating condition
- Communicate effectively with installation team members and project managers to ensure successful project completion
- Install and verify rapid shutdown systems and PV disconnects in compliance with NEC requirements
Skills & Qualifications
- Licensed electrician or working under the supervision of a licensed electrician as required by state or local regulations
- Strong understanding of residential and commercial electrical systems
- Knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local electrical codes
- Ability to read electrical diagrams, single-line diagrams, and construction drawings
- Familiarity with solar PV systems and components (inverters, racking, monitoring systems) preferred
- Ability to safely use electrical testing equipment such as multimeters and voltage testers
- Experience running conduit and performing electrical terminations
- Ability to troubleshoot electrical systems and identify installation issues
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a field construction environment
- Ability to safely climb ladders and work on residential rooftops with varying pitches
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs of equipment or materials
- Comfortable working in outdoor environments including heat, cold, and sun exposure
- Ability to bend, kneel, climb, and perform physical construction work throughout the workday
- Ability to safely use tools and equipment required for electrical installation
