Under immediate supervision, responsible for operating vehicles ranging from pick‑up trucks to tractor‑trailers used for hauling heavy equipment.
Requires occasional heavy lifting, standing for prolonged periods when flagging, patching, trimming, and other road maintenance tasks. The role includes maintaining and repairing the County Roads and Bridges system.
Key Responsibilities- Clean culverts, dig trenches, and shovel various materials, including carrion.
- Spread patching materials from the back of dump trucks (lifting and turning weights over 40 lb).
- Fill and operate crack‑filling machines (lifting blocks weighing 50 lb to a height of 4 ft).
- Manually handle the placement of Rip Rap in ditch areas that may be in excess of 50 lb each.
- Cut grass, trim weeds, brush, and trees both manually and with chainsaws.
- Handle concrete, rock, asphalt, and associated saws, compactors, grinders, and consolidators for patching and repairs, which involve heavy lifting and turning.
- Pick up trash from the County Right of Way and keep the Maintenance Facility yard, buildings, and trucks clear of debris.
- Operate snow removal trucks equipped with snowplows and salt spreaders, and may be required to work 16‑hour shifts for prolonged periods during snow‑removal operations, often operating alone in the truck.
- High school education or equivalent.
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License with the following endorsements:
Core Knowledge, Air Brakes, and Combination Vehicle (as specified in Section 391.35 of Federal Motor Carrier Regulations). - Flagger certification required within two months of hire.
Post‑offer physical qualifications will be administered according to Subpart E of Federal Motor Carrier Regulations (Sections 391.41–391.49) and alcohol and drug tests as prescribed by Federal Motor Carrier Regulations.
This position is subject to Union representation per contract, and the employee must perform all duties covered by the contract except those of the traffic‑sign maintainer, operator, and operator mechanic classification.
Starting salary: $24.8642 per hour ($51,717.55 per year). After successful completion of a one‑year probation, the salary will be raised to that of a Highway Maintainer in the Union contract.
