The Lot Next Door is an outdoor public art project and theater production led by Dorchester Weather Theatre Ensemble. The project includes an ensemble‑devised play (The Lot Next Door) inspired by community stories, neighborhood history and explores questions around development, displacement, and environmental justice. The full production will premiere August 28-30, 2026.
We are seeking a landscape designer to consult with the Dorchester Weather team to assess the current conditions of a city‑owned lot being utilized for performance and propose a landscape plan for summer activations and a full production in late August. This includes minimal but meaningful site improvements that work in coordination with existing site conditions and elements in the lot, including opportunities for planting, beautification and spatial enhancement that support the overall experience of the project.
The Landscape Designer will develop an approach that integrates with the broader site elements, including existing trees, adjacent buildings, cooling structures, audience placement, and a set design that is still evolving. After approval of the proposed plan, the designer may also support implementation and light coordination with other project partners.
Deliverables- An on‑site assessment of the lot
- A proposed landscape/site‑use concept
- Recommendations for improvements and beautification strategies
- Visual materials or layouts showing the proposed approach
- Experience in landscape design, site design, environmental design, garden design, or a related field
- Experience assessing outdoor sites and developing practical design solutions
- Comfort collaborating with artists, community‑based teams, and other designers
- Ability to balance aesthetics, budget, and feasibility
