Overview
School Crossing Guards are mainly responsible for providing school children with safe and protected access to and from their school. They communicate and enforce the policies of the Springfield Public Schools within the vicinity and ensure children understand and follow the rules. They receive on the job training as they perform their duties and may undergo further training in traffic laws and hand signals to direct traffic flow.
They should interact with children and pedestrians in a friendly manner and be able to react quickly to potential dangers that can affect children. The minimum age of a School Crossing Guard is 21.
- Escort or direct children and pedestrians across streets and stop traffic as necessary, including crossing to and from school buses.
- Control vehicular or pedestrian traffic at street crossings.
- Communicate safety crossing rules to children and others in their care.
- Learn the location and purpose of street traffic signs within their assigned area.
- Monitor traffic flow to identify safe gaps for crossing.
- Follow basic principles of student safety at all times.
- Establish good relationships with students, school staff and parents.
- Work in conjunction with school bus drivers to ensure safe crossings for boarding and alighting students.
- Demonstrate active listening and convey information effectively to children, parents and staff.
- Apply problem solving with sensitivity, clear speech and perceptiveness.
- Follow general safety rules when caring for children.
- Possess knowledge of public safety and security policies and procedures.
- Assess the needs of children and those around them, with knowledge of child behavior being imperative.
- Maintain a schedule determined on an annual basis; part-time, seasonal work only when school is in session.
- Avoid obscene or harsh language; wear appropriate clothing as outlined in the dress code.
- Conduct themselves professionally at all times; be self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Work both morning and afternoon shifts and remain standing and visible at posts throughout the shift; sitting in cars on duty is prohibited.
- Use of tobacco products and electronic devices is strictly prohibited.
- High School Diploma
- Associates Degree preferred
- Must be 21 years of age or older
- Must be City of Springfield resident
- Hourly Rate - $17.68
