Job Description School Counselors, as members of the Department of Student Support Services, provide a comprehensive developmental guidance program that supports the academic, personal, social, and career development of students in grades 6–12. They deliver proactive and preventive skill‑building lessons, collaborate with student support staff and other school personnel, and help ensure all students have the opportunity to succeed.
Responsibilities
Report to the Principal in conjunction with the Director of Student Support Services.Implement a Comprehensive School Counseling Program that addresses the Counseling Standards and Student Priorities for grades 6–8.Deliver guidance curriculum lessons in classrooms and large groups; integrate the curriculum into overall educational programs; select topics and resources aligned with school objectives; conduct orientation for new students; provide transitions between elementary, middle, and high school; assist students in developing educational and career goals; use tools such as Choices Explorer, Career Information System and the Graduate Profile Planner for middle school students;
support high‑school choice planning; interpret standardized test results.Offer structured, goal‑oriented counseling for individuals and groups: counsel entire classes, small groups, and individual students; use the MA Curriculum Frameworks and student achievement data to advise students.Serve as a resource for teachers, staff, and parents: facilitate conferences with these stakeholders; model appropriate behavior in interactions; maintain records of interventions and decisions.Refer students and families to community agencies, programs, or specialists as appropriate; keep an updated list of district and community resources; coordinate referrals; advise on student placement, including regular education, English Language Learners, and special programs.Advocate for all students, respecting cultural, ethnic diversity, and equity issues.Contribute to evaluation and revision of the counselor program: review annually; plan the guidance calendar; help develop a program budget; assess counselors’ roles in supporting the school improvement plan.Fulfill professional responsibilities: maintain confidentiality; keep records consistent with legal and ethical guidelines; work accurately and timely; support students in challenging course selections; operate within federal, state, and district policies; support other school and district programs; attend professional development, stay updated on trends; use computers effectively; pursue ongoing professional growth; complete additional duties as directed by the Principal.Qualifications
Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university.Certification as a School Counselor by the Massachusetts Department of Education.Preference for those with advanced guiding training.Strong interpersonal and communication skills.Knowledge of intellectual, social, and emotional development theories.Familiarity with school guidance counseling philosophy, principles, and practices.Awareness of mental health, substance abuse, and violence issues affecting students.Experience in crisis management and intervention.Experience with a comprehensive school counseling program.Familiarity with Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.Familiarity with the American School Counselor Association Framework.At least ten credit hours beyond a bachelor’s degree in counseling or a related subject such as psychology of tests and measurements.Successful teaching experience in secondary schools is preferred; prior counseling experience in schools or community agencies may be considered in lieu of teaching experience with the superintendent’s approval.Equal Opportunity EmployerSpringfield Public Schools is committed to maintaining a work and…
