Learn and Earn Summer School Literacy Intervention Teacher/LIT

Description

Education students from American International College, Bay Path University, Elms College, Springfield College, or Westfield State University, will provide literacy intervention instruction to students attending summer school. Applicants must have received approval to apply for this position in Springfield Public School’s Empowerment Zone (SEZP) from the institution they attend. If hired, the LIT will instruct students in reading/literacy intervention practices under the guidance of the Principals and Lead Literacy Coach.

Goal

To teach students reading skills in a culturally responsive manner that will contribute to their reading/literacy development.

LITs report to the Principal and work closely with their assigned Lead Literacy Coach to do the following:

  • Meet and instruct assigned literacy intervention classes/groups in specified locations and at times designated. The primary focus of the LITs is to provide targeted literacy intervention instruction to students and to provide deliberate practice opportunities for students.
  • Create a classroom intervention environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  • Implement program materials and approaches for effective literacy intervention instruction and assessment beginning on day 1 of summer school and throughout the 16 days.
  • Assess the accomplishments of summer school students on a regular basis; and with supervision, provide progress reports, as may be required, and communicate with parents, as deemed necessary.
  • Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation upon request of the Principal and Lead Literacy Coach and by college faculty from the Western Mass Literacy Collaborative who are overseeing Learn and Earn.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations, including weekly student attendance and weekly progress in the intervention lessons.
  • Interact with and support other summer school classes led by school-based educators as deemed necessary. This is secondary to providing the interventions.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Follow the SPS code of conduct for the classroom which is consistent with established administrative policies and develops rules of classroom behavior which are enforced in a fair and just manner.
Qualifications
  • The candidate must be an education student at American International College, Bay Path University, Elms College, Springfield College, or Westfield State University, and must have received approval to apply for this position in Springfield Public Schools from the institution they attend. Only students whose names were provided by the colleges/universities will be considered.
  • Must be available to work all days and hours of summer school without exception Monday-Thursday, July 6-July 30, 8:00-1:00 PM.
  • As part of coursework with the colleges and universities, must attend the professional development week (June 26 - July
    2) from 9:00 AM-3:00 PM and all sessions of the companion 3-credit course. These hours are not paid for by Springfield Public Schools/Springfield Empowerment Zone Partnership as they are a part of the 3-credit course provided by the colleges/universities of the Western Mass Literacy Collaborative (Summer Learn and Earn).
  • Must provide a statement on the following and attach to this application:
