Adjunct Instructor, Laser Optics Technology (Photonics) Part-time

Springfield Technical Community College seeks a dedicated and experienced Laser/Optics Technology (Photonics) part-time adjunct to join our School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching in the discipline, as well as developing curricula in laser/optics and quantum adjacent technologies. Understanding contemporary community college students, many of whom are adults, this faculty member guides students through theoretical and practical/lab learning environments, preparing graduates from a Certificate or Degree program for careers in fields that continue to evolve and expand.

The adjunct will also contribute to the college's mission of fostering student success through innovative teaching and community engagement, which includes early college partnerships.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Teach a range of courses in Laser Optics Technology (Photonics), including but not limited to Laser Fundamentals, Geometric & Wave Optics, Intro to Optics & Photonics, Fiber Optics Technology, Advanced Topics in Lasers, Industrial Laser Applications, Senior Projects, and Laser Safety.
  • Develop and update curriculum materials to reflect the latest advancements in photonics and quantum adjacent technologies.
  • Provide hands-on laboratory instruction, ensuring students gain practical experience with industry standard equipment and techniques.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to design and implement effective teaching strategies that support diverse learning styles.
  • Meet all contractual and STEM Division requirements for reporting student grades and course materials.
Requirements:
  • A minimum of an Associate's degree in Laser Optics, Photonics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field;
    Bachelor's or Master's degree preferred.
  • Proven experience in laser optics technology/photonics, with a strong understanding of both theoretical concepts and practical applications.
  • Prior college teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse student population.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
