Responsibilities

  • Meet and instruct assigned classes at designated locations and times.
  • Plan a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of established district curriculum goals, and establish and communicate clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects.
  • Prepare for assigned classes and provide written evidence of preparation when requested by the immediate supervisor.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with the physical limitations of the location and the needs of the student groups.
  • Strive through instruction and action to implement the district’s philosophy of education, instructional goals, objectives, and performance expectations.
  • Assess student accomplishments regularly; provide progress reports as required and communicate with parents when deemed necessary.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Diagnose learning challenges of students regularly and seek assistance from district specialists as required.
  • Take all necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Follow the SPS code of conduct for the classroom, develop rules of behavior, and enforce them fairly.
  • Plan and supervise assignments for paraprofessionals, and make written evaluations as required.
  • Maintain an ongoing program of professional growth meeting district requirements and personal expectations.
  • Participate actively in the contractually approved teacher evaluation process and negotiate a mutual agreement regarding evaluation results.
  • Attend building and district meetings to promote communication and mutual decision‑making among staff; meetings are held during the extended day.
  • Attend traditional school‑sponsored activities (e.g., Back to School Night, Open House, programs) as agreed with the building administrator and faculty.
  • Contribute to district and building decisions regarding budget, facilities, curriculum, and personal well‑being.
  • Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
Qualifications
  • Highly qualified with required competency in the content area.
  • Appropriate content/program area educator license (Foreign Language) and grade‑level licensure (PreK-6 or 5-12) from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  • Bachelor’s degree with appropriate license; or
  • Master’s degree with appropriate content‑area license preferred and/or expected within five years.
