Lunch/Recess/Bus Monitor (Mon-Thu 9:30 AM–6:00 PM & Fri 8:00 AM–4:00 PM).
Description: The Lunch/Recess/Bus Monitor, in collaboration with school staff, supervises a large group of students in the cafeteria, hallway transitions and/or on the playground. The Monitor works within the school system’s behavioral policies to maintain cafeteria, hallway and playground standards that ensure a safe, orderly, and nurturing environment. The Monitor works under the general supervision of the school administrator or designee.
Performance is evaluated periodically.
- Monitors the safety of students in the cafeteria, on the playground and during play equipment use.
- Communicates respectfully, appropriately and effectively with students and staff.
- Manages student movement in and out of the cafeteria, on and off the playground, and through the halls.
- Monitors students upon arrival and departure in the cafeteria and playground, as well as during hallway transitions.
- Supervises lunch line and assists students during lunch.
- Ensures student responsibility for clean-up and orderliness; adheres to cafeteria/recess schedule.
- Sets tone and example for appropriate table and school bus manners.
- Meets with administration and cafeteria/recess committee to provide feedback and suggestions.
- Implements incentive programs developed by school/culture team.
- Attends pre- and in-service training on large group management.
- Maintains knowledge of school rules, procedures and standards to ensure safety and order.
- Stands for long periods and endures varying temperatures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Ability to interact and communicate effectively with students and staff in a respectful, efficient and cooperative manner.
- Ability to respect individual diversity and needs of children.
- Proactive problem-solving approach.
- Familiarity with safe use of playground equipment and rules for playground games.
- Ability to provide extra and personal attention to students as needed.
- Ability to manage large groups of children and maintain composure under pressure.
- Ability to assist with movement and supervision of groups of children during activities.
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED) preferred; verification of education required.
- Experience working with elementary-age children is highly preferred.
