Job Description & How to Apply Below

We are currently seeking a teacher that lives in Western Mass. You must be available to teach on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays (although Sunday bookings are rare).

Pop up Art School teaches a wide variety of in person art classes for community organizations in Massachusetts and northern Connecticut. Freelance teachers at Pop up Art School can expect a fun and flexible teaching job in a friendly environment. This is the perfect position for school teachers. Our busy times are when school teachers are on break.
Kindly refrain from applying if you do not have full-time access to a reliable car.

  • Our students have chosen to attend the class and are excited to learn
  • Teach many kinds of lessons: from follow along to open ended project-based lessons
  • If you like variety, you will enjoy teaching different mediums and techniques, driving to new locations and meeting new hosts and students.

Work independently and interact with our hosts and students. Classes are for kids (ages 8+), teens, adults and seniors. This position provides a fun environment with lots of variety. In every class you will meet a new host, new students and a new location. Hours are perfect for a school teacher as our peak times are during school vacation weeks and summer vacation (July 5 to August 15).

Shifts are also available during the school year.

Pay range: $125 per program plus driving fee were applicable. We pay $15 an hour when training, and when you are learning how to make a new lesson.

In the summer you can expect to teach 2 in person classes a week. During the school year, you can expect to book 2 to 4 classes per month and they are generally scheduled during after school hours and weekends.

Reliable transportation is a must.

Key responsibilities:
  • Set up supplies and clean up afterwards
  • Connect your iPad or laptop to the library's A/V system
  • Give a short slideshow presentation at the beginning of the class
  • Accommodate all learning styles and facilitate art games with early finishers.

For in person classes you will be on site for approximately 2.50 to 2.75 hours.

Education:

At least two years of college

Experience:

At least two years of experience working with groups of children and teens in some capacity, such as at a day or summer camp, or in a classroom.

You:
  • Friendly, positive, upbeat and able to help others feel good about their efforts.
  • Ability to present to groups of students in a clear and detailed manner. During the class, you will need to help students through the steps of the project in a way that respects their learning style.
  • You do not need to be an artist for this position, but you should enjoy using your hands and being creative. You will learn new art techniques and projects in order to teach our classes. Our classes range from drawing and painting to needle felting and clay sculpting. Most of our classes are a follow along format while others are project oriented and open ended.

Reliability and punctuality are a must.

You must have reliable transportation. Depending on your location, you may drive 45 to 60 minutes each way to the library's location. Our teachers create their own driving zone and charge a fee for areas further away. You need a smartphone to take pictures during the class and a portable device such as a laptop or iPad. A Google account is required as we share resources via Google.

We provide all materials for the classes, but you will need to replenish supplies like paper towels and baby wipes for which you will be reimbursed.

Pop up Art School has been popping up all over New England for 13 years, with over 2,500 programs taught. We are a small company with two co-founders and we've built a reputation for reliably creating and delivering engaging hands-on classes for community organizations.
