Definition

Responsible for appropriate lesson planning and implementation of age-appropriate play-based curriculum for an Early Education and Care (EEC) licensed Preschool program for ages 2.9 to 5 years that is run by the Arlington Recreation Department. During summer months is responsible for planning, coordination, and oversight of recreational summer programming for students 2.9-5years of age.

Supervision

Works under the general supervision of the Preschool Director; works collaboratively, in accordance with EEC regulations, established procedures, departmental policies and standards; unusual situations are referred to the Preschool Director.

Performs a variety of responsible duties which require attention to detail and accuracy and the exercise of considerable judgment and initiative in carrying out.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Assumes responsibility for classroom management of preschool students. Provides oversight and direction to seasonal staff, volunteers and part-time employees working in the classroom setting.

Work Environment

Most work is performed in a classroom setting conducted indoor and outdoor at the program site. The workload is subject to seasonal fluctuations. The employee operates standard office equipment, sports equipment, classroom equipment, automobile. The employee has ongoing contact with the public and regularly interacts with other town departments. Contact is in person, by telephone, e-mail and in writing. Errors could result in personal injury, injury to others, and legal repercussions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Creates a positive and structured learning environment based on a “Play Based” curricula where learning happens through engaging and hands on experiences.
  • Fosters a nurturing atmosphere where children feel safe, respected, and encouraged to learn and grow.
  • Encourages open communication, decision making, and problem solving amongst parents, faculty and administration.
  • Participates in the ongoing development of age-appropriate curriculum and develops new units of study as needed.
  • Responsible for monitoring and inventorying classroom supplies and equipment to ensure they are adequately stocked, clean, safe and properly stored.
  • Participates in team meetings to discuss needs of individual students, curriculum planning, and other classroom issues as need.
  • Maintains cleaning and upkeep of the facility and maintains an orderly physical environment and monitors safety situations at all times.
  • Plans and conducts daily activities for the children in the program that will contribute to the care, growth and development. Manages classroom behaviors.
  • Keeps accurate records for the children and the program as required by the EEC and the Recreation Department
  • Follows licensing procedures to safeguard the health and safety of the children at all times.
  • Monitors each child’s progress as it pertains to growth, development, and performance; identifies any learning or development issues and reports to the Preschool Director for further intervention as needed. Provides input on children’s written progress reports.
  • Maintains regular communication with the Preschool Director and parents about children’s progress or concerns and collaborates with other teachers and staff.
  • Works with the Preschool Director on planning and operating summer recreation programs for children ages 2.9 to 5 years old.
  • Performs similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

Must be at least 21 years of age or have a high school diploma or equivalent and meet one of the following sets of requirements:

  • Have successfully completed three credits in category Child Growth and Development and have nine months of work experience or one practicum;
  • Have a Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential;
  • Have graduated from a two-year high school vocational program in early childhood education, approved by EEC for both the education and experience requirements and have been evaluated and recommended by the program instructor.
