General Statement of Duties
The Economic Development Coordinator is responsible for advancing the City’s economic development goals and priorities as identified in the City of Methuen’s Master Plan and by the Mayor and Director of Economic and Community Development. This full-time, in-person position serves as a primary point of contact and “one-stop shop” in City Hall for businesses seeking to locate, expand, or reinvest in Methuen, supporting business attraction, retention, and growth efforts.
The Coordinator cultivates strong working relationships with business owners, property owners, developers, regional partners, chambers of commerce, and community organizations to promote key business districts, including Downtown Methuen, The Loop, and the Merrimack Street corridor, while encouraging visitation and investment citywide. The position also assists in streamlining business permitting, licensing, and development review processes across departments, responding to inquiries related to zoning, incentives, and permitting requirements with a strong emphasis on customer service and responsiveness.
Prepares and analyzes economic, demographic, and market data; develops reports and recommendations for City leadership, boards, committees, and public; and maintains citywide databases related to businesses, commercial properties, and development activity. The role assists in identifying, preparing, and administering grants and other funding opportunities that support economic development, revitalization, and placemaking initiatives. The position coordinates and participates in meetings, site visits, public events, and outreach activities, including those held outside normal hours, and conducts public engagement efforts to gather input and communicate progress on economic development initiatives.
Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in business, urban planning, public administration, economics, or a closely related field and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in economic development, planning, community development, or related area; or a master’s degree in a related field with progressively responsible experience in community or economic development; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A valid Massachusetts Driver’s License is required.
The successful candidate must be able to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and exercise sound judgment. Bilingual Spanish/English preferred.
