Surgical Technologist

Location: HVOR – Baystate Medical Center
Schedule:
Full-Time, 40 Hours – Day Shift

Rotating weekends, holidays, and on-call required

As a Surgical Technologist, you will play a vital role in supporting complex cardiovascular and invasive surgical procedures within a collaborative, fast-paced environment. Working alongside surgeons, physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary team members, you will help ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical outcomes for our patients.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Unit Manager, RN Clinical Operations Coordinator, and/or RN Service Leads, the Surgical Technologist works directly under surgeon and physician guidance to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures.

This role requires expertise in sterile and aseptic technique, strong knowledge of human anatomy, and proficiency with surgical instrumentation and advancing technologies. A successful Surgical Technologist anticipates the needs of the surgical team, continuously assesses the sterile field and patient condition, and supports minimally invasive, invasive, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures.

You will be accountable for maintaining competency, adhering to department policies and procedures, and contributing to a culture of safety and excellence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure safe operation, management, and inspection of surgical equipment and instruments in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and hospital policy
  • Prepare and maintain the sterile field throughout procedures
  • Actively participate as a member of the operating room team, with awareness of patient history, allergies, and intra-operative care plans
  • Demonstrate knowledge of pharmacological agents used in the sterile field, including mixtures, doses, and labeling standards
  • Maintain an environment that supports patient safety and aseptic technique
  • Accurately complete required documentation within scope of practice
  • Meet requirements of the Clinical Recognition Ladder for Surgical Technologist Level I
  • Support sharps safety initiatives and intra-operative temperature regulation measures
  • Handle and label specimens accurately
  • Communicate effectively using appropriate medical terminology
Required Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program (Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation approved) or completion of a structured training program with professional equivalent
  • Surgical Technologist certification required for new hires without prior surgical facility experience before July 1, 2013
