About the Office for External Education - Postgraduate Medical Education

The Office for External Education provides health care professionals, corporations, and lay audiences with broad access to Harvard Medical School’s peerless and constantly expanding body of medical knowledge. Our educational offerings are created in collaboration with members of the School’s almost 12,000-member faculty and reflect firsthand, expert clinical insights based on breakthrough research and best practices. Our portfolio of innovative medical education opportunities is available to learners around the world and includes live in-person programs, hybrid courses, self-paced online learning, digital products, educational webinars, podcasts, and printed materials.

OEE’s Continuing Education (CE) holds Joint Accreditation with Commendation and is dedicated to delivering accredited educational activities designed to maintain, enhance, and expand clinicians' knowledge, clinical skills, professional performance, and collaborative relationships in order to improve care for patients, advance public health and support health professions. Serving as the accredited provider to Harvard Medical School and the 15 Affiliate Hospitals, in 2025, the HMS CE team accredited 362 activities, offering a total of 9459.5 credits and educating over 51,000 learners.

The Continuing Education (CE) team, within the Office for External Education (OEE) at Harvard Medical School (HMS), provides accreditation and support for educational activities sponsored by the 15 HMS Affiliate Hospitals. Reporting to the Assistant Director, Program Development, the Program Manager, Affiliate Programs (PMAP) is responsible for all workflows related to post-approval programmatic support. The incumbent manages a dynamic team of coordinators, monitoring timelines, implements program initiatives and ensures the delivery of consistent customer service to HMS Faculty course planners.

Working closely with a cross functional team of CE and OEE colleagues, the incumbent demonstrates a commitment to proactive conflict resolution, issue escalation, and maintains a culture of continuous quality improvement to ensure that all JA/ACCME and HMS policies are adhered to. Occasional weekend or off-hour work may be required.

Operations and Team Management
  • Manages the day-to-day operations of the program support team, monitoring deadlines and providing guidance to staff members regarding the prioritization of workload
  • Oversees the program support staff, including hiring, training, development, corrective action and performance evaluations
Accredited Activities Programmatic Management
  • Provide exceptional customer service to affiliate course planners and internal stakeholders, ensuring compliance with accreditation and HMS policies and procedures
  • Develop and maintain program standards to ensure consistency of communication and support for all accredited activities
  • Lead quality assurance (QA) efforts to ensure accuracy, consistency and compliance for all course materials, evaluations, learner data and learner communications
  • Manages the course evaluation and credit claim processes to ensure timely delivery of participant results and accuracy of participant records to all accreditation and medical/clinical boards
