Job Title
Spanish Medical Interpreter
SummaryFull‑time, on‑site position in Springfield, MA. Department:
Interpreter Services. 40 hours per week. Status:
Non‑Exempt.
- Associate’s degree or high school diploma, or equivalent background and experience.
- Complete fluency in English and the target language.
- Experience in a broad medical field or completion of a medical interpreter training program.
- High level of oral and written communication skills in both target language and English.
- Ability to prepare effective reports and give presentations to large groups.
- Professional appearance and demeanor, capable of interacting positively with patients, staff, visitors and the general public.
- Discretion in handling confidential information.
- Self‑directed, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills in the patient’s best interest.
- Strong organizational skills and computer proficiency (track patient flow, word processing, scheduling).
- Interpret in verbal, sight‑interpretation, and written modes with highest accuracy and completeness.
- Select the appropriate mode of interpretation for each situation.
- Self‑correct, understand own linguistic limitations, and seek clarification.
- Pick up cues from participants regarding level of understanding and need for clarification.
- Write reports and translate as required.
- Act as intercultural mediator when communication is compromised by culture‑bound messages, avoiding generalizations and stereotyping.
- Use culturally appropriate behavior and select appropriate times to clarify or interject while respecting the encounter’s goals.
- Maintain professional distance and integrity; diffuse conflicts by remaining calm and impartial.
- Clarify instructions, follow up diplomatically and effectively.
- Advocate for patients by encouraging referrals to patient navigators or managers when concerns arise.
- Explain the role of the interpreter and the complexity of the clinical encounter to patients, providers, and medical staff.
- Strong understanding of the target language’s regional accents and linguistic styles.
- Advanced writing skills and understanding of translation process.
- Friendly, reliable and professional in behavior and appearance.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, able to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Awareness of personal values, beliefs and cultural characteristics that may create conflict; ability to acknowledge and withdraw when necessary.
- Understand and abide by health center policies on patient confidentiality, informed consent, non‑discrimination, and the interpreter’s code of ethics and standards of practice.
