Position: Toolmaker (CNC Programmer- Set Up Operator)

Position Overview

Use appropriate CAD/CAM software along with equipment such as surface grinder, CNC, wire EDM, OD GRINDERS, and other machinery to create and prototype product parts, components, fixtures, tooling, gauging, and other machined items. The toolmaker must be able to take conceptual ideas all the way through final finish and assembly, creating angles and radius on all tooling to achieve high-quality, tight-tolerance parts within quality and production standards.

Creating Solid Works models, selecting material and tooling, producing CNC code, and following components through completion is required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work from engineering drawings and concepts to mark out designs on raw materials and cut into shape using manually controlled machine tools (lathes, milling machines, grinding machines, jig borers, and jig grinders) and hand tools.
  • Utilize Solid Works, CAM software, CNC machines and perform operator-performed programming.
  • Read blueprints and use measuring devices to make or modify existing tooling for old or new job prints.
  • Assist production area with troubleshooting machining processes and equipment problems.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering to create prototype tooling and parts.
  • Set up and operate all machines in the tool room.
  • Create set-up carts or process staging for any machine upon request; ensure timely print preparation and safe, well-maintained tools.
  • Operate hydraulic and air clamping systems.
  • Maintain quality standards, use inspection devices, and report as required.
  • Accurately complete labor or time sheets.
Education and Experience
  • High School/GED.
  • Prior experience working in a manufacturing environment.
  • 2-3 years of related experience.
Competencies and Skills
  • Solid Works and CAM software experience.
  • Completed an apprenticeship training program.
  • Ability to produce finished components from a concept or solid model.
  • Strong math skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, rate, ratio, percent, bar graph interpretation, algebra and geometry.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic and air clamping systems is a plus.
Physical Demands

Continuous: standing, walking, lifting, bending, pushing/pulling, and reaching.
Occasional: kneeling, sitting, squatting, overhead work, fine and gross upper-body motor movement. Maximum lift: 30 pounds, assisted lifting allowed. Continuous use of hand tools.

Work Environment and Personal Protective Equipment

Safety glasses with side shields and hearing protection are required on the manufacturing floor. Additional PPE may be required based on tasks. Employees must apply ergonomic principles to all job tasks.

Work environment includes typical office settings and exposure to plant hazards, manufacturing noise, airborne chemicals, particulate dust, varying temperatures, and mechanical hazards.
