The Summer Camp Nurse is a seasonal position, on-site role based in the Springfield, Massachusetts Metropolitan Area at Wilbraham & Monson Academy’s summer programs. This role provides direct nursing care to campers and staff, including assessment and treatment of minor injuries and illnesses, medication administration, and health monitoring throughout the camp day. The nurse maintains accurate medical records, manages health forms and documentation, and ensures compliance with camp health policies and relevant regulations.
Daily responsibilities include coordinating with camp leadership on safety protocols, communicating with families about health concerns, overseeing infection control practices, and responding promptly to emergencies. The nurse also helps promote wellness through health education, supports campers with chronic conditions or special medical needs, and contributes to a safe, inclusive camp environment.
- Current registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN) license in Massachusetts; prior pediatric, school, or camp nursing experience is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated skills in patient assessment, basic triage, first aid, and emergency response, including CPR and use of emergency medications and equipment.
- Experience with medication administration, health documentation, and maintenance of confidential medical records in accordance with legal and ethical standards.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with campers, families, camp staff, and external healthcare providers in a respectful, inclusive manner.
- Knowledge of infection control practices, allergy and asthma management, and care for campers with chronic conditions or disabilities.
- Ability to work independently in a dynamic camp setting, exercise sound clinical judgment, and remain calm and organized under pressure.
- Familiarity with youth development or educational environments; prior experience in residential or day camp settings is a plus.
- Relevant certifications such as CPR/AED, First Aid, and pediatric emergency care; comfort using basic computer systems for health records and communication.
