Quality Control Technician (Field) (Req #: 1419) Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and dependable Field Quality Control Technician to support our paving operations team. This role is responsible for performing on-site testing and inspection of hot mix asphalt to ensure compliance with project specifications, industry standards, and quality expectations. The ideal candidate will have experience working in outdoor field environments, an understanding of paving operations (or a willingness to learn), and a commitment to maintaining a safe and productive work environment.
This is a field-based position that requires flexibility to work varying shifts, including early mornings, nights, weekends, and extended hours, based on project schedules and operational needs.
Essential Functions- Safety always wins. Ensure strict adherence to safety, environmental, and company policies while working on job sites.
- Measurement. Perform field sampling and testing of hot mix asphalt in accordance with industry standards (e.g., AASHTO, ASTM, and applicable state DOT specifications).
- Results matter. Conduct density testing using a non-nuclear gauge and other approved quality control methods.
- Determined. Monitor material temperatures, mix properties, and compaction levels during active paving operations.
- Ownership and caring. Accurately document and report daily test results to internal teams and regulatory agencies, as required.
- Communicate. Findings and concerns promptly with paving crews and project management to support proactive quality assurance.
- Dedication. Assist in identifying and troubleshooting quality concerns in the field, recommending corrective actions as needed.
- Obligated. Maintain testing equipment and supplies in good working condition and ready for use.
- Mastery. Support internal audits and maintain project documentation to meet compliance and quality record requirements.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; an associate degree or technical training in construction materials, civil engineering, or a related field is a plus.
- Prior experience in asphalt testing, paving operations, or construction materials quality control strongly preferred (on-the-job training available).
- Familiarity with DOT specifications and quality standards related to asphalt paving are preferred.
- Relevant certifications such as NETTCP, ACI, or equivalent preferred (or willingness to obtain is required).
- Must have a strong attention to detail and proficiency in documentation and record-keeping.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and flexible hours, including early mornings, nights, and weekends, based on project demands.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
- Authorization to work in the U.S.

TravelThis position requires frequent travel to job sites throughout the region, with approximately 90% of time spent in the field and 10% in the lab, depending on business needs. Travel may be conducted using a company vehicle or a personal vehicle; mileage reimbursement will be provided for the use of a personal vehicle.
Work Environment/Physical DemandsThis position works outdoors in hot, humid and inclement weather. Heavy work includes moving objects up to 50 lb. or more. This position works on or near moving mechanical parts and loud equipment. Requires the ability to stand for long periods of time as well as lifting, bending, squatting, walking, reaching, and repetitive motion.
