Position purpose/summary: responsible for the maintenance and repair of the city's air conditioning systems and equipment. Work is performed with considerable independence in accordance with accepted trade practices adapted to municipal requirements under the general direction of a supervisor of higher grade who reviews work through inspections for conformance to established standards. No supervision is exercised over other staff.

Essential functions:

* restores air conditioning equipment to original operating standards.

* modifies equipment as needed to ensure future reliability.

* troubleshoots and repairs air conditioning equipment and control systems.

* completes reactive and preventative maintenance paperwork.

* assists in emergencies as needed.

* works according to the schedule prepared by the supervisor.

* returns all work areas to a clean, neat, orderly and safe condition.

* learns, understands and complies with fire, safety and other emergency practices.

* participates in training directed at increasing maintenance and other job-related skills.

* performs related work as required.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

* considerable knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, equipment and techniques of the trade.

* ability to keep records of activities performed.

* ability to read and understand blueprints and drawings.

* considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

* ability to locate, diagnose, and correct defects and malfunctions on a variety of air conditioning equipment.

* ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

* skill in the use and care of tools, equipment and materials of the trade.

Education and experience:

* high school diploma or equivalent, including or supplemented by technical courses relating to the trade.

* minimum of two years of experience as a skilled air conditioning mechanic.

Special necessary qualifications: cfc card.

Technology, equipment, systems and tools: requires basic computer skills and knowledge of all air conditioning related equipment, tools and materials.

Working conditions:

work is mostly performed in a field environment. Regular and predictable attendance is a requirement.

Physical requirements and potential hazards: while performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear; stoop and bend over; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
