Job SummaryFor the first time in 25 years, KY3 is looking for a chief meteorologist. The role involves creating engaging, informative, and compelling weather stories for on‑air and digital platforms and helping the weather team deliver high‑quality content. The chief will coordinate weather community outreach, lead the weather app development, and develop a weather streaming strategy for severe weather and daily shows.
Duties/ Responsibilities
- Analyze weather data to produce accurate forecasts.
- Prepare detailed weather forecasts for broadcast.
- Collaborate closely with newsroom management on weather‑coverage plans.
- Create and publish digital content several times per shift.
- Host daily weather streaming and aggressively cover severe weather events.
- Lead the meteorology team, scheduling regular feedback sessions.
- Stay up to date with weather technology and new tools.
- Maintain a flexible schedule to cover all severe weather events.
- 4+ years as a broadcast meteorologist.
- Prior experience as a chief meteorologist is a plus.
- Degree in meteorology or a related field.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team.
- Leadership experience for an on‑air weather team.
- Ability to make decisions about First Alert Weather days.
- Experience in graphic design and presentation development.
- Consistent and accurate weather forecasting skills.
- Proficiency in digital (streaming, web) and social media platforms.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Extensive severe weather experience, especially with storms and tornadoes.
- Experience as a public speaker before large crowds is a plus.
- Familiarity with WSI equipment and radar technologies is a plus.
