Job Description

Job Title:  Counselor – Boyd Elementary School

Department: Student and School Services – Counseling

Pay Grade: Teacher's Salary Schedule including 5 Additional Days and $550 Supplement

FLSA Status: Exempt

Reports to: School Principal, in collaboration with the Director of Counseling

General Purpose

This position is responsible for providing support to the instructional process with specific responsibility for implementing the three components of the Missouri Comprehensive School Counseling Program:
Social/Emotional Development, Academic Development and Career Development. The counselor also provides information and recommendations to parents and students, assists in the development of goals and plans for achievement.

Essential Job Functions
  • Analyzes student transcripts to ensure compliance with graduation requirements.
  • Assists students in the transition from high school to post‑secondary education, ensuring continuity of services.
  • Assists students in developing Personal Plans of Study to support their high‑school and post‑secondary goals.
  • Assists students with applications (e.g., scholarships, college, financial aid) to ensure completion within designated time frames.
  • Coordinates with teachers, parents, students, and in‑district or community agencies to provide or receive requested information and to recommend actions that meet developmental needs.
  • Counsels students, parents, guardians, and teachers to enhance student success and address immediate needs.
  • Implements comprehensive school counseling curriculum, assigned programs and/or projects in accordance with district and state objectives.
  • Monitors student progress to identify issues and take appropriate action to increase success.
  • Reports health and safety issues to administrative personnel or appropriate agencies (e.g., fights, suspected child or substance abuse) to maintain safety and compliance.
  • Researches program eligibility requirements (e.g., financial aid, college eligibility) to provide up‑to‑date counseling.
  • Performs other related duties as required/assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Master's degree from an accredited college in a job‑related area, required.
  • Job‑related experience with increasing levels of responsibility, required.

Certificates, Licenses and Other Special Requirements

  • Must hold a Missouri Counselor K‑8 Certification, required.
  • Must maintain "Highly Qualified" status as defined by Missouri's Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, required.
  • Must pass a satisfactory Criminal Background Clearance, required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of pertinent laws, codes, policies, and regulations; personnel processes; standard business practices; teaching strategies; working with families; and stages of child development.
  • Knowledge of algebra and/or geometry; ability to review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, speak persuasively, and analyze situations.
  • Skill to perform multiple technical tasks and routinely upgrade skills to meet changing conditions.
  • Skill in operating standard office equipment, utilizing software applications, planning and managing projects and programs, overseeing program finances, developing relationships, and preparing accurate records.
  • Ability to schedule activities, meetings, events; gather, collate, analyze, and classify data; and ensure effective operation of the department and programs.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals under varied circumstances.
  • Ability to analyze issues, data, create action plans, and achieve departmental and district strategic objectives.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking/problem solving to improve work processes.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, set priorities, meet deadlines, work with detailed information, and adapt to changing priorities.
