Job Summary:

Works closely with dedicated colleagues at the Robert and Mary Cox Compass Center in academic advising and related student success initiatives for a diverse Drury undergraduate student population.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assists the Director of Academic Advising with initial services and appointments for incoming and current first and second-year students.
  • Assist students to find information online or on MyDrury about credentials (e.g., majors, certificates, and minors) and refer to appropriate faculty.
  • Help students access their Advising Worksheet on MyDrury and help students understand how they use and consult their Advising Worksheet when planning classes or making a two or four-semester plan.
  • Assist undecided students to explore and declare their major(s) and credentials. In this capacity, be familiar with initial classes recommended for Drury majors, minors, and certificates and able to help students identify such classes.
  • Assist students with finding registration information on MyDrury. Able to teach students how to use MyDrury to register for classes.
  • Coach students on professional communication with faculty advisors and professors.
  • Cross trained to assist the Director of Career Planning & Development with presentations, workshops, career fair preparation/execution, and internship processes (approximately 8-12 hours per week).
  • Represents the Cox Compass Center at campus functions and events such as Admissions visit days, Drury Bound, Fusion First Day, and New Student Orientation.
  • Assesses need for support services and making effective referrals to faculty, student resources, and other campus resources including the Office of Financial Aid, Burrell Counseling, the Dean of Students and other Student Affairs offices.
  • Maintains advising notes on student appointments in Handshake.
  • Contributes to the success of the Cox Compass Center as a positive and effective team member. Works cooperatively with colleagues to develop innovative student success workshops and programs, classroom presentations, and support the mission of the Cox Compass Center.
Required Skills/Abilities:

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Bachelor's degree in related field and 2-years related experience is required;
    Master's degree in counseling, student affairs, higher education, the liberal arts, STEM field, business, human resources, or related field preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous experience in career services, academic advising, admissions, or higher education preferred.
  • Ability to use PC, Microsoft Office, databases, Internet, e-mail, printer, and other relevant industry software/technology.
  • Ability to organize and set work goals effectively when working with more than one unit director.
  • Ability to serve as a mentor to students.
  • Ability to understand and present information about Drury and its mission, organization, characteristics, purposes, and philosophies.
  • Ability to speak effectively, give presentations, and write clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks, provide attention to detail, concentrate for proofreading work, and maintain accurate information.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and oral communications skills are necessary for assisting visitors, students, staff, and faculty.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and with a broad range of internal and external constituents including students, staff, faculty, alumni, and employers.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations, dealing effectively with conflict between students and campus offices.
  • Ability to work occasional weekends and evenings to provide programming and marketing for special events.
  • Ability to establish good rapport with students, staff, faculty, alumni, and employers.
  • Ability to evaluate current procedures and implement positive changes that serve Drury students and the mission of the Cox Compass Center.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in related field and 2-years related experience is required;
