Job Description

This position is responsible for providing highly specialized, individualized educational services to students with disabilities who require intensive instruction, modifications, and accommodations to access the general curriculum and functional life skills. The teacher will facilitate learning in the classroom and other instructional areas by developing lesson plans, delivering small group and individual instruction, supervising students, and collaborating with other teachers, staff, and administrators to address instructional and classroom challenges.

The teacher will also respond to inquiries from students, parents, or guardians regarding their child's instructional program and progress.

Essential Job Functions
  • Administers developmental testing programs, subject-specific assessments, and other tools to assess student competency levels and develop individualized learning plans.
  • Provides daily support (e.g., tube feeding, toileting, diapering) under supervision to ensure appropriate care for students.
  • Advises parents and legal guardians on student progress, expectations, achievements, and methods for improvement.
  • Assesses student progress toward goals such as behavioral, motor development, communication skills, academic needs, and vocational abilities, and provides feedback to students, parents, and administration.
  • Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes and support the school improvement plan.
  • Case manages students' individualized educational programs (IEP).
  • Provides an effective educational program that addresses individual student needs.
  • Differentiates classroom work to meet individualized learning plans within established lesson plans.
  • Directs student teachers, paraprofessionals, volunteers, and/or student workers to facilitate an effective classroom program.
  • Facilitates student learning by creating a learning environment, integrating technology, arranging field trips, and organizing age-appropriate activities.
  • Instructs students to improve academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
  • Maintains confidential and non-confidential records, including test scores, evaluations, and IEPs, in accordance with administrative guidelines and legal requirements.
  • Manages student behavior and monitors students in various educational environments to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Participates in meetings such as professional development, staff meetings, and IEP planning to document student progress and meet mandates.
  • Prepares written materials, including grades, attendance, anecdotal records, and data collection documents.
  • Reports health and safety issues to administrative personnel and relevant agencies.
  • Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.
  • Responds to inquiries from teachers, parents, administrators, and other resources.
  • Supports classroom teachers by assisting with curriculum implementation and individual student plans.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in a job-related area, required.
  • Job-related experience with increasing levels of responsibility, required.

Certificates, Licenses and Other Special Requirements

  • Special Education certification in Missouri for mild to moderate disabilities (SLD, ED, , OHI, and cross-categorical), required.
  • Ability to gain and maintain "Highly Qualified" status as defined by Missouri's Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, required.
  • Must pass a Criminal Background Clearance, satisfactory to the District, required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of pertinent laws, codes, policies, teaching strategies, and child development stages.
  • Knowledge of algebra and/or geometry and ability to interpret technical information and communicate persuasively.
  • Skill to perform multiple technical tasks and continuously upgrade skills.
  • Skill to use standard office equipment, software applications, and program management tools.
  • Ability to schedule activities, meetings, and events; gather and analyze data; and ensure effective operation of the department.
  • Ability to work with diverse individuals under varying circumstances.
  • Ability to analyze issues, create action plans, and align with strategic objectives.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking and problem-solving to improve processes.
