Position Overview

Job Title: Airframe and Powerplant Instructor

Department: Technical Education

Salary Range: Salary commensurate with experience

FLSA: Exempt

Immediate Supervisor: Aviation Department Chair

Schedule: Full‑time / 12‑month position / PSRS

This position is responsible for 15 credit hours of instruction per fall and spring semester, and three credit hours of instruction or internship supervision for the summer semester. Equivalent short‑term instruction may be exchanged for credit instruction.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement daily lesson plans and activities to manage assigned classes.
  • Create a classroom environment that implements best practices, supports industry standards, and engages students.
  • Maintain required industry and professional certifications for specialized fields.
  • Provide quality instruction using college‑approved curriculum and resources.
  • Actively engage students with intentional best‑practice teaching strategies.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and assessment of curriculum to meet program goals.
  • Plan and prepare learning environments with needed materials and supplies, including textbook and course materials selection.
  • Develop a course syllabus for each class taught using the approved course abstract and syllabus template.
  • Present course content in an unbiased and civil manner, demonstrating respect, helpfulness, and responsiveness toward students.
  • Maintain accurate record keeping for assigned classes, including attendance, grades, and other classroom information.
  • Schedule and maintain weekly office hours convenient to students.
  • Assist students with concerns regarding advisement, placement, and course difficulties.
  • Facilitate student recruitment and promote programs.
  • Complete professional development training hours and maintain certifications.
  • Participate actively in department and division meetings, events, and initiatives.
  • Maintain confidentiality of students, parents, guardians, and staff.
  • Exhibit exemplary attendance and punctuality.
  • Comply with college policies and procedures.
  • Comply with FAA requirements in aviation maintenance.
  • Demonstrate and promote safe maintenance practices, including safety manuals, guidelines, tools operation, and shop organization.
  • Prepare orders for supplies, equipment, materials, and parts used for repair and maintenance work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, such as participating in commencement, advisory committees, sponsoring student organizations, attending college functions, serving on committees, and attending community events.
Qualifications
  • Associate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning (or ability to complete within six months of hire).
  • FAA Airframe and/or Powerplant aircraft mechanic certificates.
  • Valid Missouri teaching certificate with the Department of Elementary & Secondary Education (or willingness to obtain a current teaching certificate in secondary and post‑secondary education).
  • Knowledge of current practices that promote safety in aviation maintenance.
  • Three years of relevant work experience in the aviation maintenance industry or a related field.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair defects in aircraft and equipment.
  • Demonstrated current knowledge in course content and effectiveness in teaching assigned subjects.
  • Availability to teach daytime, evening, or weekend courses as needed.
  • Ability to work without direct supervision and use discretion for administrative involvement.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with information technology for professional productivity (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • FAA Aircraft Mechanic Certifications in both Airframe and Powerplant.
  • FAA Aircraft Mechanic with Inspection Authorization (IA).
  • Current and recent experience as an FAA aviation mechanic.
  • Five years of work experience as a certified airframe and power plant mechanical in both general and airline operations.
  • Electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience working on avionics technology.
  • FAA Private Pilot Certification or higher‑level pilot credential.
