Position Overview
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Division of Legal Counsel/Deputy General Legal Counsel/Division of Records is seeking candidates to serve as FOIA/Records Screeners, Environmental Protection Legal Investigator I’s. The ideal candidates will be organized, detail‑oriented, and possess excellent critical‑thinking skills. They must be able to adapt to change in a collaborative, fast‑paced environment and communicate effectively verbally, electronically, and in writing with both internal and external stakeholders.

Essential Functions- Receive and analyze agency records to identify exemptions from public disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) for the Division of Legal Counsel and Division of Records.
- Process FOIA requests in accordance with FOIA regulations.
- Research and review laws, administrative regulations, precedents, and other references pertaining to the agency.
- Maintain and update the FOIA reference manual, including revisions and new procedures for reviewing confidential and trade‑secret claims and justifications.
- Perform other duties as reasonably required or assigned within the scope of the position.
- Two years of college (or equivalent) and one year of investigative experience in law enforcement, insurance, security, or a related field.
- Ability to follow oral and written directions.
- Ability to compile and summarize data in a clear, concise format.
- Ability to apply and interpret laws and regulations relating to environmental protection.
- Ability to maintain satisfactory working relationships with superiors and the general public.
- Proficiency with a personal computer and knowledge of Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel.
- Requires the ability to pass a name‑based background check.
8:30 am – 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday (1 hr lunch). 37½‑hour work week.
