Overview

Assistant Stylist engages with guests, consults on hair care needs, and recommends products and services. This temporary role prepares talent for a full stylist position by delivering quality professional services with emphasis on the guest’s total look. Initially mentored by an Elite or Master Stylist for 3 months, progressing to independent servicing in months 4–6. Requires passion for the beauty industry, exceptional guest service, and willingness to learn technical skills and product knowledge.

Principal

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Deliver exceptional guest service and support store goals for retail and service sales.
  • Support mentor stylist in meeting sales and productivity goals for hair services and products through add‑on recommendations, shampoo and treatment process, blowouts and styling, color applications, foils, sanitation, pre‑booking, and retail recommendations.
  • After month three, perform hair services including hair design, haircuts, color, texture, hair treatments, styling, updos, perms, blowouts, keratin treatments, extensions, makeup applications, brow services, and ear piercing (where applicable).
  • Perform product demonstrations with guests to drive sales.
  • Support in‑store events, promotions, and marketing initiatives.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, products, and services.
  • Maintain prompt, regular attendance.
People
  • Develop guest relationships through consultations and recommendations.
  • Serve all guests in a timely and efficient manner under mentorship.
  • Collaborate with skin therapists and the retail team for a total‑store experience.
  • Establish professional relationships with peers and brand partners.
  • Share benefits of the guest loyalty program, including credit and the Ulta Beauty app.
Process
  • Know and ensure compliance with Ulta Beauty’s policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Follow safety, sanitation, and infection control procedures and state board guidelines.
  • Follow established service protocols for consistency.
  • Use booking and clientele systems to book guests for return services and events.
  • Communicate supply needs to the Experience Manager.
  • Maintain store operational standards (cleanliness of salon, salesfloor, restrooms, backroom, break area).
  • Attend mandatory trainings and meetings.
  • Adhere to the Ulta Beauty dress code.
  • Protect company assets via loss prevention best practices.
  • Execute other operational tasks as directed.
Job Qualifications Education
  • Cosmetology license
Skills
  • Basic understanding of salon techniques for haircutting, haircolor, lightening, styling, texture, treatment, extensions, makeup, brow services, and ear piercing (where applicable).
  • Basic understanding of equipment and chemicals used for technical work.
  • Ability to recommend and sell professional hair care and makeup products.
  • Developed communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong customer relationships and clientele.
Special

Position Requirements
  • Work a flexible schedule including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Working Conditions
  • Frequent mobility during shift.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, and twisting.
  • Continuous lifting and/or moving up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Continuous coordination and manipulation of objects.
  • Frequent use of a computer, telephonic devices, and related office and cosmetology supplies.
