Job Overview

The Direct Support Professional is the bridge between people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their communities. You will encourage and mentor individuals by supporting them in maximizing their full potential. The DSP role is involved in providing supports to all aspects of individuals life activities. Support may include daily life skills of cooking, cleaning, hygiene, medication administration, behavioral care, and community participation.

Day-to-Day

Responsibilities
  • Educate clients on skills such as personal hygiene, cooking, grocery shopping, cleaning, and other activities of daily living.
  • Explore various community businesses and social activities with clients while supporting their employment, household, and personal goals.
  • Work hand in hand with your team to plan and advocate for your clients.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of eighteen years of age.
  • Diploma from an accredited high school or equivalent.
  • Passion for working with individuals with disabilities and increasing their independence.

Essential Job Functions
  • Serve as an ambassador of the mission and purpose of The Arc of the Ozarks.
  • Provide support to individuals in dressing, bathing, personal hygiene, house cleaning, laundry, and other activities of daily living.
  • Assist with purchasing groceries and supplies; support meal preparation.
  • Provide basic health care; take vital signs and apply simple dressings.
  • Administer medications after certification.
  • Take appropriate action in case of emergencies.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies.
  • Apply outcomes and strategies of individual personal plans.
  • Encourage a safe and clean environment.
  • Document changes in physical, emotional, and behavioral status.
  • Assist in orientation and training of new employees.
  • Support clients in becoming active community participants.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Good judgement and discretion.
  • Flexibility to work varied and flexible hours.
  • Respect for individuals with disabilities and advocacy for their rights.
  • Ability to learn and apply crisis intervention and behavior support techniques.
  • Administer medications and insulin injections after certification.
  • Teach basic skills and model adaptive behaviors.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and agreeable environment.
  • Accurate reporting and record keeping.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Physical ability: stand, stoop, lift up to 50 lbs, push/pull items.
  • Pass CPR, First Aid, and Behavior Intervention training.
  • Maintain punctuality and attendance record.
  • Licensed and insured driver; obtain class E driver's license if driving Arc vehicle.
Minimum Experience and Training Qualifications
  • Minimum age of eighteen and high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Complete CPR and First Aid course.
  • Complete 16‑hour Medication Administration course.
  • Complete 10‑hour MANDT System Workshop.
  • Complete OSHA health and safety regulations course.
  • Complete Abuse & Neglect course.
  • Complete Electronic Documentation course.
  • Other trainings per department or location may be required.
